Hey everyone, I am an incoming M1 at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and am just trying to get an idea of the competitiveness in regards to matching into anesthesia, specifically into a California residency. I am initially from California so I am not sure how much of an impact that will have come residency applications. I went ahead and emailed a few anesthesiologists that are affiliated with the UCF COM and one has responded and offered to meet with me when I get out to Florida.

Apart from getting more experience in the field and networking prior to 3rd year clerkships, what are some other things that I can begin to do during M1/M2 that will help me match back in CA. Obviously, do well in Step 1, do well in my 3rd year clerkships, do away rotations etc but as far as research or fellowship programs what would be best use of my time?

Our curriculum has a built in research project so should i try to find something anesthesia or pain management related? Any and all input is much appreciated!

aside from what you listed already - there's nothing else you can really be doing

this post is wrong in so many ways. I remember being an incoming med student and trying to reach out to the neurosurgery interest group and asking the same questions you're asking. The last 3 years I have hardened my heart in a way I could never have imagined. What I would give to be that young again and to have the world of possibility before me. You're going to get this optimism crushed out of you
Dude you should go talk to someone...this is like the 5th or 6th post along these lines. Don’t let the system beat you

Keep an open mind you are a rising M1 there is a lot youll be exposed to before MS3/4 when you have to make a decision and its not like plastics ortho NS or Derm where its more important to know early on what you want to do so you can plan research etc accordingly. As far as competitiveness goes anesthesia isnt all that competitive and even less competitive since youll be an MD. Point of my post is dont just tunnell vision gas there may be other specialties that youll love and you wont know until 3rd year rotations

You’re from there and you’re at an MD school — you’ll be fine with an average to slightly above average step 1 score and a small amount of research. If you want a top program you will need more than that.

Meh, what people are missing is that step 1 might be out the window for you by the time you are matching. Networking is going to be so much more important now than it once was.

It could change as early as this December. I doubt that will actually happen but it could.

So this means youre suggesting P/F Step?

I dont know what your question is asking but yeah I am referring to that (or whatever their committee comes up with).
