Incoming P1s...can't stop them

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lol! I went to college, I am better than all of you working class citizens! *humph*

It's about investment vs. expectation. If I graduate from pharmacy school and invest time and money in my education, then hell yah I would expect to do better than my friends who decide not to attend college.

Compare paychecks and knowledge. There are also jobs out there that do not require a degree that pay more than a pharmacist...... mind explosion?

and yes, we can breathe through our nose and mouth.

a dental hygienist makes like $35-45 an hr in the tri state area, and a hospital pharmacist only makes $45ish. to become a dental hygienist you only need a two-yr associate degree. on one of my rotations, i had a dental hygienist told me that we would be making about the same amount of money, except she is younger and she is not in debt and i am,.

Not bad, my friend dropped out of dental hygienist school because her advisers and profs were talking about how hard it was to find a job (sound familiar?) She went on to nursing school and still had a relatively difficult time finding a good job.

But anyone who plays in other peoples mouths deserves my respect and a higher pay than me, lol.

i think playing in other peoples mouths is more fun than staring at a computer screen all day - no joke!

I can see why, but it is just so gross  Almost as bad as a proctologist....another profession that definitely earns their pay.

what about occupational therapist/physical therapist? i know someone whos graduating OT school soon and she secured a job already and she is telling everyone that OT is the way to go now. salary is around $80k from what she tells me and it is 2 1/2 yrs after undergrad

Why not just go PA route? 2 years after undergrad and you can make better money. Although i am not sure how the job stress compares.

Stupidest quote I have ever seen on SDN.

Plenty of restaurant managers work this and still only earn their 38k per year because they are salaried and exempt from earning over time pay.

They did not have to spend 8 years in school, have $150k in loans and will also get heavily tipped. They can pop out the back for a cigarette, get a complimentary meal I assume (and get to sit down to eat it), and go for a leak and the whole world doesn't fall down.

If they make a mistake, they just re-order another entre, if pharmacists make a mistake we can lose our license or worst case, injure someone.

So come on guys stop comparing pharmacists to manual, unskilled labor we are talking apples and pears here.

like what? they stand for 14 hrs without a break?

Uhm....yes....or dig ditches, pick vegetables, clean hotel rooms, among other things. In fact, they might go from one job where they pick up **** to another job where they sell slurpies all in one day.

You seem incredulous.

Unless your intent is to compare pharmacy solely to other "on par" professions and, if that is the case, I point to nurses and physicians, who also run their asses off everyday.

I don't think it's a good thing for pharmacists (or anyone else) to be working 14 hours straight without a break but, in the end, you DO have a choice. Personally, I'd say **** that, and I'd go do something else.

OR, you can change the system somehow and make the best of it.

When I worked retail, the most whiny pharmacists were also the laziest. We had plenty of floaters come through the ghetto and all they could concern themselves with was the possibility of getting their car broken into or having to deal with "these people".

Let's face it, the reality falls somewhere in between the excessively negative viewpoints and the "work hard and it'll all be fine" and/or pharmacy unicorn viewpoints. Unless you are one of those grads who is unemployed with 200k in debt...then you're probably pretty freakin' bitter.

There are exceptions to the rule but in general, don't go retail if you want good working conditions.

I like the part where a forum admin graduates and gets a job, but instead of "congrats man on everything working out," they get "well hope you like working in Bumf**K, Egypt." Hell half these people did not even know the state where the guy went to school, guess they do not "frequent" the forums as much as they claim.

Really, I understand wanting to point out the pitfalls that many do not see when they choose Pharmacy as a job option, but damn, ya'll can't even take one second to even seem happy for others.

Many working class jobs are....but they don't get paid 6 figures... Just sayin'

There you go with the comparison to the "working class" again... Just can't help yourself, can you? Lol surprised you didn't bust out the "poor" and "our soldiers" this time

You fail to see my point.

If it bothers you so much, don't read it 😀

You can't expect much from the "entitled".

Agreed. Even speaking their language of hyperbole doesn't seem to make it click. Perhaps it's a generational thing-- I'd love to study it more. They've written books about it. Then again, the generation was lied to. The boomers sucked everything dry and until they retire and/or die, we'll continue seeing these stupid threads.

The class of 2013 fared just fine in securing jobs or a residency, at least at my school.

Thats because you dont go to a diploma mill :meanie:

Quite interesting because the state you're in is regarded as very saturated (I'm assuming that you're working in the same state you graduated pharmacy school from).

I am in the same state. It wasn't hard at all. I don't know why people complain on here. I am not aware of any classmate who is still unemployed.

Sorry to anyone who is struggling, but lets be honest, there are still plenty of pharmacy jobs.

Congratulations on securing the job. Going forward, with all the new schools graduating their first cohorts of students, can you see the ease at which your class found jobs continuing?

No, it is only going to get harder. "Harder" is relative though. We will probably always be better off than law, but not as in demand as physicians. Though with healthcare reform who knows who the winners and losers will be.

I am just worrying about myself finding a job rather than warning people who want to go to pharmacy school. You can't really convince anyone of anything, they are still going to go to pharmacy school regardless. People do what they want to do, you see that in patients who won't take their medication or don't take it right. Sometimes I would warn pharmacy interns working under me, but for them, it's already too late, they have decided their fate.
I just wish all these new pharmacy grads hadn't affected my search in the job market.

we need real people like you and others to keep telling them the reality. This way, it will help with rebalancing demand vs supply in our profession. If we don't do it, none else will.

I'm competitive and I plan on being on top. I have already started reading the material 6 months out from when school starts. I know I'll find a job SOMEWHERE - I'll move, retail, do whatever I have to. I want to do a residency and specialize in pediatrics - but I'm passionate about the field and I'm going to keep going.

Good lord if I had a dollar for everything I've read this exact same thing on here I would retire.

Yep, everyone plans on coming out on top, everyone plans on networking, and everyone plans on being the one who doesn't have any problems. Everyone plans.... Irrational optimism is a distinctly human trait.

We're a generation told we can be anything we want to be. We're passed along through school not on the merit of our work but by simply showing up. Its no surprise that an endless supply of starry eyed kids continue to sign up for mountains of debt. They laugh when we talk about indentured servitude. Jokes on them

Well, I am the incoming P1 year here. I am about to start this upcoming Fall.

I am aiming towards the nuclear specialty, not sure how this field looks either. 🙁 LOL YEAH NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF THIS THREAD!

Don't you dare tell me I am not a special snowflake that can do anything I want to do!

Save me tell me how is it out there! I'm a youngin' seeking love and help! 😀 The world's most optimistic kid is now doubting!
