just saw this email from ECFMG that there is an increase in the number of unmatched positions for this years scramble. I guess they have finished running the alogorithm and are satisfied with the results. My question is this....why are they torturing the applicants by having them wait for another 11 days? 🙁

Increase in Number of Unfilled Positions to Which Applicants May Apply Using ERAS

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recently announced an increase in
the number of unfilled positions to which participants in the Post-Match Scramble
may apply using ERAS. For details, access "ERAS Use During the Scramble Period," on
the AAMC website at:

Preparing for the Scramble

The AAMC website offers additional information on the Post-Match Scramble.

I think they mean we can apply to more programs (45) than previously stated (30).

Yeah, I got it too. While there's maybe some comfort in knowing that if we have to scramble there are more unfilled positions this year, I'm hoping that I'll be able to avoid the scramble altogether.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. Instead of applying to 30 programs, you can now apply to 45 programs. It doesn't mean that there are more unfilled positions this year. It might be lower, higher or the same as last year.

I'd bet everything I own that the number of unfilled positions will decrease every year from here on out. There's a bunch of new med schools coming online and the # of residency slots is flat.

I'd be shocked if there were actually more unfilled positions this year.

So we can apply to a larger number of unfilled programs through ERAS then. Great, I guess. Don't know if it will really be an advantage though.

No, There is no way in hell that there will be more spots open for the scramble this season. If anything the number of spots will decrease. The number of applicants and the competition has been increasing year after year.

The ERAS email is refering to the increase in number of positions that you can apply to through ERAS in the scramble. Before you can only apply to 30 spots through ERAS in the scramble, now you can apply to 45.

If last year's scramble was a headache , this years scramble will be a migraine.

Good Luck, and my heart goes out to all those who will be forced to scramble this year. I was there last year at it was not pretty. I am still suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from the butt pounding I had from the scramble last year.
