It drives me a little bonkers to see how many premeds can't seem to weigh out the pros and cons of something and come to a decision on their own without seeking the validation of others. I just don't think it bodes well to being successful in medical school and beyond. Maybe it's something learned in time? I dunno. Rant over, flame away.

These are important and difficult decisions. It's not that people are unable to decide on their own--if they had no choice and nobody to turn to for advice, people would make their own choice in the end. But if you have resources to turn to (whether that's SDN or people in real life), that can be useful. It can give you a different perspective, or help clarify things.

You could argue that not seeing any value in consulting others before making difficult choices also doesn't bode well for being successful in medical school and beyond.

Half of the threads on the first page don’t qualify in my mind as important or particularly difficult conundrums to sort through independently if you have a functioning brain.

there is inherent uncertainty in every aspect of our lives. Being paralyzed with anxiety about that and needing constant coddling along the way is counterproductive.

What is your suggestion? Maybe sending all premeds to work in the mines or something

I think there’s a greater social issue at hand that I need more time to put into a coherent thought/idea/theory as to why this may be the case.

I will posit an alternate theory: Premeds applying to medical school feel a lack of control (with good reason). To deal with that, premeds a) try to read into minutia that does not have a large effect on the outcome, which causes them to ask questions about and speculate on the minutia, and b) seek community to calm their nerves, which causes them to ask often simple questions to make sure they are not an outlier who simply doesn't get it.

In addition, pre-med advising is mostly given by *****s at UG schools.

It's also an anxiety-provoking process.

Then throw in all the Tiger Parents tormenting their kids.

Eh. I just think we're a neurotic indecisive bunch.

It took me an hour yesterday to decide if I'd eat food with friends on campus or go home early and eat at home.

Let me guess you decided to eat with friends only to find out the already ate because you couldn’t make up your mind

I did end up eating with friends haha. They didn't eat without me thankfully 😛

I was actually a bit early to dinner.
