I am a pharmD student and I don't have any ideas about independent pharmacies and how they work.... Would you please share your experiences and ideas? How hard is it to manage a successful independent pharmacy?

not too hard, just show up at your store everyday and let it run itself. you'll be making at least 300k/year.

Independent pharmacies are like any other independent business these days. It involves very long hours, and you probably won't succeed unless you can tap into some kind of niche market. Compounding is one thing that comes to mind; most of that is usually cash and carry because much of it is for veterinary clients.

I also know of one independent pharmacy that was opened by three classmates, two of them married to each other, all of them new graduates. It's at a grocery store in a very rural area, and except for a little hole in the wall run by a pharmacist who's about 80 years old, they're the only game in town.

The independent I work for has seen a major increase in compounding lately..mostly due to hormone replacement therapy. Another big reason we get calls for transfers is that we deliver.

Every independent is different. Check out one in your area or around your school, and visit more than one.

A lot of things are going to be up to the owner and the manager, so you'll see things running differently depending on who is in charge.
