Okay, so I have been accepted to NYU, am on Indiana's instate waitlist, and am in the top 5. I am also being told from Indiana that I am more than likely to be accepted. For some reason, I am having the hardest decision choosing where I wanna go! So...here are my current thoughts:

Indiana:
Good God! I graduated from IUPUI (where the dental school is located), did not like it, and honestly want to run, because I feel like Indy is a vortex of no escape and if I don't leave now...I'll never leave! Obviously my family is here, but they can visit right? I'm not even sure I want to practice here.....
PBL: ehhhhh.....
Tuition: about $30,000
Class Size: Very small compared to NYU
Cadaver lab: ehhhhh...

NYU:
NYC...love it!
No PBL: woo hoo!
Tuition: $45,000 (received a small scholarship, something is better than nothing!)
Class Size: Huge, but it doesn't bother me.
No cadaver lab...just the "bodies exhibit guy."

I just sent in my second NYU deposit, and I know that getting into Indiana isn't a definate, but it is a strong possibility. I know most will say go to Indiana because it's cheaper, but is it worth it if students at the school are THAT miserable! I mean, I know no dental school is gonna be a cake walk, but I feel like I hear so many bad things about that school.

I obviously know the ultimate decision is up to me, but an honest opinion would be greatly appreciated 😀. Thanks in advance!!!

I would def go with NYU. I LOVE NEW YORK!!! Even though it is very expensive to live in NY city.....

Dentalgal,

I have a question. What are your deadlines for deposits for NYU. I am on the waitlist so I was just wondering when they are going to start pushing through the waitlist.

Thanks!!

The second deposit is due April 1st. Not postmarked, but physically in there hands by April 1st, so people on the waitlist should here something very soon!! Good luck!

IU. You're not factoring in cost of living... You could put a hefty down payment on a practice once you graduate with the cash you're saving...

I am a current NYU student and I love it. Its a great school with wonderful people.

just wondering..how is it like living in NY? Were you from there? I've been living in Florida my whole life and NYU is one of my top choices.

As far as I'm concerned, I've talked to so many dentists who were unhappy during their four years of dental school because they were in ghetto areas.

But almost ALL nyu students are happy to be in NYC and loved the atmosphere there. Most of them are rich to begin with though 😱

If you have the money, GO to NYU.

Wow, an IUPUI student?!!

Read my comments/opinion about the PBL curriculum and the ridiculous triple jump exams that we have to take as 1st year students.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=607299

I don't mind the PBL curriculum, as it kind of prepares me for some of the materials for certain lecture classes.

However, the triple jump exam requirement is ridiculous! :scared:

You would think IU School of Dentistry would cut out the triple jump exam BS, when there are other dental schools like Case Western Reserve that have a hybrid PBL/lecture curriculum, but no triple jump exam requirements.

PBL may work for certain people. But just take a look at other dental schools like USC's dental program, and you'll see that PBL, eh, is not the best way to get students to learn didactic-related material.

I'm a big fan of cheapest school and that was a huge factor in deciding which school I will attend this fall. Having said that I would chose NYU in a heartbeat. No offense to any future/current students but Indiana is the last place I'd want to spend the next four years of my life. Its old, boring, and frankly the school is outdated. NYU gives you a chance to live in one of the most exciting and culturally diverse cities in the world. If my family wasn't on the west coast I would have been attending the other NYC school this fall.

Thanks to those of you that gave your opinion. I have to say, I was already pretty sure that NYU was gonna be for me...this definately helped!
