I'm a pre-dent just curious about what it means to work "in industry" when talking about dentistry. Does anyone here work in industry or know of anyone who works in industry? I haven't heard about many dentists going into industry and was curious what they do...

Anybody out there just correct me if I’m wrong if this is actually a thing, but I believe you are misinterpreting. When someone says they work in the “dental industry,” they work within that, dentistry. Kind of like when someone works in the music industry, finance industry, etc.

If you mean working at jobs that doesn't involve patients, there are jobs in "industry" like working in dental research, working for insurance companies, working for dental companies like suppliers, x-rays, chairs, software, etc.

most dentists I know in these jobs generally either had a catastrophic injury or hates/sucks at being a dentist and makes less $$ than they would in private practice, so just something to keep in mind.

It is definitely less back breaking though, so there is that

Agreed. Interned at a dental supply company, worked in product design and strategy while in school. These co's really appreciate the clinical perspective. You'd be surprised how little they know about how things are done chairside. There is def a path there but you'll be working your way up the corp ladder. Don't expect to be earning as much as a dentist when starting out.
