I was looking on the ucsd som website, but the information they have there about their curriculum and program in general are really vague. They do go into some detail about their independent study project, but don't give much info about their class structure, lecture vs pbl, hours of class, etc.

Does anyone know where I can find mroe of this info? (I thought i found a good link on the ucsd site, but it required a login =/ )

The curriculum is actually being revamped starting with the people who will be MSIs next year. I'm not part of the committee so I'm not very clear on what the changes are, but I know one major thing is that it's changing to straight P/F. Currently, we have P/F the first quarter and then H/P/F thereafter.

^I hope that helps?

In short, its all traditional lecture classes, except for some small group work which seems to come in during the elective courses. MS1s take traditional classes in the various subjects with the 2nd year pharm students, at least for this year, but for the class of 2013, they expect a complete curriculum rehaul. The dean will debrief you on all of this, including the old and new curriculums, at the start of the interview day.

Maybe or maybe not. They're voting on the proposal in December and they weren't very clear as to whether they'd implement changes for the class of 2013 or for the following year. The only guarantee is that you'd get shorter core clinical rotations in year 3 giving you the option to choose more elective rotations.

thanks! I saw that there are 21 hrs of electives every week? is this normal for other med schools, or is this unusually high?

ooo thanks, that seems like it'd be a great change, if it goes through =P

Actually... that's not correct at all. People usually do about 3-4 hours of electives per week (= 3-4 credits). For example, I'm taking an awesome Introduction to Emergency Medicine elective that involves 2-3 hours of lecture about topics such as toxicology and pediatric emergency medicine (or a suture workshop... that was cool) and some out-of-class time where we actually go into the ER and shadow. It's pretty sweet. There's a great selection of electives relating to education, the community (free clinic, for example), politics, nutrition, shadowing, etc. No one ever told me about this before I got to UCSD, but the elective offerings are awesome.

I went to croutons w/ silverlining1 for lunch when I was there last week, haha.

Good luck dulcina!

According to Brian Zeglen, the big curricular overall, won't take effect for two years. Class of 2013 will not see any major changes. The only guaranteed change for class of 2013 will be the creation of longitudinal community groups/colleges. This will allow for sustained interaction between MS1-4's, because there is a current complaint of a lack of interaction. If you really want to know everything on this issue, I'd email Dr. Kelly. She tell you what's up.

What's with the student hosts taking everybody to Croutons? Tell them to take you to Donovan's!
