right now I'm serving in the US navy (active duty) with about 2 years left. I'm planing to pick up as much college as I can while I'm in and I have a wealth of various services available to me while I'm in. My questions are what kind of stuff could I be doing to make myself look more attractive when I get out, and does anyone have any experience with the military. any input would be appreciated

I got out of the Navy about a year and a half ago. I would definitely take as many of your pre-reqs as you can while you can get them paid for, plus it looks good on your eval that you are taking classes. Do you have most of your pre-reqs out of the way? I am a year behind because the Navy college office didn't pay for one of my classes on time and I was dropped from the class. I was PISSED. I would definitely check up on them if you are having them pay for your classes. Since I havn't been accepted yet, I really can't say what you should do to be more attractive. I would definitely do some volunteer work though, and don't forget what you are learning in your pre-reqs, you'll need it for the PCAT! Where are you stationed?

I agree that you should try to get some volunteer work, if that's possible, and also to take as many prereque's as you can. I got out of the army in 2001 with an AA from the University of MD. I am sure that that helped, however, I still had 2 years of schoolwork to do because in the areas I was in, they just didn't offer Calculus, Physics, Chemistry or Advanced Bio courses like Microbiology. So, I guess that I would just caution you to be aware that these classes usually require labs, so you can't take them through military channels (or I wasn't able to, anyway) You might be able to become a Pharm Tech through the Navy, or before you get out, take that correspondance, so you could get a job as a Pharm tech while you finish up other requirements. Another possibility is to try to shadow the Pharmacists at the base/ship you are at and to interview them and really get to know them and pharmacy. One thing that is more difficult for "older" students is those letters of reccommendation, since they usually have to be academic or from a pharmacist that you've worked with, so if its possible to lay the ground work for that, that would be just as valuable.

On the bright side, you usually can take other classes, like English and History. You are getting valueable experience in the Navy and you can definitely play that up in your interview. My interviewer definitely questioned my service, where I was stationed, my leadership experience and why I chose to get out. I believe that the unique experiences I had in the military made me a more attractive candidate. I was definitely more mature and I wasn't just doing Pharmacy because I had to choose something-I made a choice to get out and pursue that.
So, good luck, and if you have any other questions, just ask!

While i don't have any suggestions as the others do, I am going to take this opportunity to thank you for what you are doing for our country and for our freedom. My boyfriend is a marine and I am a firm believer that you should never pass up an opportunity to thank our men/women in uniform. 🙂

I don't have much school at all out of the way. I came in for the GI BIll so that I wouldn't have to bear so much of a burden on my wallet . with the rising cost of school and housing it seemed fair enough to me. I've been worried about the Navy college they never seem to cut it when it comes down to bussiness. they always try to put me in clep courses, they only teach stuff for first year criminal justice majors on base, and most of the schools they may try to get you into are all a little below par.as far as volunteer work goes there may be something around. I'm in Norfolk right now. I just moved from Virginia beach a few days ago so maybe there is more going on this base than the last one. by the way thanks for the gratitude from everyone it makes the job just a little easier knowing that the American people care.
