Hi all, I am really interested in the ATSU Mesa college and have been keeping up with the info on this board regarding the program. Anyone know what the final 10 sites that were chosen as the Community Health Centers for years 2 - 4? Anyone have any info on how many people the school is going to be interviewing or how many acceptances they are going to be having?

The only bit of info that I can offer is this: I called up the school and they said they are going to start interviewing about 30 people every Friday starting from Jan 12 - sometime in April. So that works out to be about 430 total people interviewed.

Anyone else have any input on this school? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Well,
The class is going to be 100 students. The students only spend 2 semesters on the Mesa campus then they are shipped to public health clinics around the country. This school is completely geared for students who want to be primary care docs in rural public health clinics. When I went to the open house they said that students interested in anything else besides primary care should not apply, so they are really really serious about that. Hope that helps! 😀

Well they actually called me about two weeks ago to interview there this Friday (Dec 15th), which they said was the first interview day. Then they will start interviews again in January because of the holidays!

When I called last week, I was told that the sites had not yet been confirmed yet..but they were working on it..

hmmm?

I saw the list of the final 15 sites they are trying to narrow down to 10. Anyone know if they have finally settled on the final 10?

I think they are more worried about getting the school open at this point. They are already way behind for this cycle. I forgot to mention earlier that the med students and the dental students will be in class together for those 2 semesters that the med students are in Mesa.

Monsoon,

Can you please tlel me where you found the list of fifteen community health centers?

If it's not online, do you mind typing it out on here?

Thanks

Here is the list of 15:

Seattle, WA
Oregon
Visalia, CA
Salt Lake City, UT
Canyonlands, AZ
Casa Grande, AZ
Tucson, AZ
Colorado Springs, CO
Ohio/Kentucky combo
Alabama
Beufert, SC
Marshfield, WI
Bronx, NY
Brooklyn, NY
Hawaii

That was directly from the admissions office. Hope this helps. 😀

they send me another interview email today and i scheduled myself for the 18th of January!!! Anyone else going?

didn't send in my letters yet..my prof..is taking forever..crazy..😡

how long after the secondary..did you get the invite?

I wonder how the sites will be picked for the groups of 10...that makes a big difference for me...

if I wanted to go to school in cold weather..I would have applied there..you know..

but I really am interested in their school..perhaps I will call.

I have talked to the admissions office about how they groups of ten will be selected and they said it will work similar to the match system for residency. Apparently they have certain factors that will play a part of the selection process. What would everyone's top choice for the 15 be?

I've been talking regularly with the admissions office, and they said the school is definitely going to be opening in 2007.

They also said they'd signed contracts with 8 of the 15 CHCs and were waiting for the last 2 to sign up. I don't know what those 8 are though...

Some of the differences that COM-Mesa has with established DO programs are a little disconcerting, but I am still interested in the school nonetheless.

If anyone goes to an interview or learns more about the program, please post the information here. Thank you!

Hey super21,
I thought you were the property of DCOM and now you are going to cheat on DCOM with Mesa, shameless! I am debating whether to go on the 11th or 18th of Jan. I also noticed that the 15th of Dec. is still available. This school is definetly going to be very different than any other DO school. I am most concerned about how the students would do on the comlex/usmle and all the traveling that students in this program would be doing. 😱

The 15th of December is still available? Hmmm...that's tempting, even though it's only two days away. Oh wait...I need an invite first, silly me. 🙂

Right there with you, LittleG. I got my secondary in as soon as I could and am waiting anxiously for word from Mesa.

That makes two of us. 🙁 I just hope I get the invite so I can schedule for at least in Jan.

Hey Little and Monsoon,
I have faith that both of you guys will get invites soon! Try not to worry. 😀

I wonder what factors they are looking for?

I really want anything in Arizona, CA or Hawaii..I need warm weather..please..

Yea for warm!! 😀

Yea for warm!! 😀

Warm is nice, it's just when it's 112 that it begins to suck. You would think that after 27 years of living here that I would want to move, but I think I am a zonie for life. 😀

Same as y'all. I'd love the warm weather. The hotter the better! Just hope I get the invite so I CAN live in Zona.

How was the interview on firday?

What do you guys think about cramming all of the didactic into one year? I know we are learning a heck of a lot of stuff in 2nd year at my school, especially system based clinical material. Are you worried that you may not know enough when you get out onto these community health centers? Just curious...

BMW-

I definetly have worries that this school may not provide enough basic science material and time for the students to do well on certain parts of the comlex/usmle. It does sound like the clinical exposure will be good. It is hard to say how this program will turn out. Who knows, maybe they will have to rethink the whole program after it gets started. I have high hopes though. 🙂

I agree that there is some concern in me about the basic sciences, but I don't think that they completely ignore them after your first year. They are taught in conjuction with the clinical aspect of the program. From what I have been told, the basic sciences are taught through clinical situations. If anyone knows more about this, please let us know. That is what I have gathered from the admissions office.

Ok, tell us about the interview...

Did anyone interview on Friday the 15th? I am curious how it went...😕

Does anyone know what the school is considering primary care? I know the basics: pediatrics, family medicine, psychiatry, and ob/gyn. Will they consider emergency medicine or other specialties as primary care?

They are only considering the basics primary care; family practice, peds, ob/gyn, and internal medicine. They are primary care for community health clinic oriented so subspecialties that may be considered primary care in some instances like EM and Psych may not be considered primary care for this school as far as I know from the open house. Hope that helps. 🙂

Thanks for the info. It gets a little confusing on what exactly primary care is since some schools include more specialties.

Can somebody tell me what essay questions are on the Secondary app for COM-Mesa??

Here they are:

Briefly describe your motivation for participating in the activities you have described in the clinical, volunteer and community service section and any effect these experiences had on you personally.
(Please limit your response to 500 words or less).

How does your character, qualities and experiences distinguish your ability and resolve to serve in underprivileged communities?
(Please limit your response to 500 words or less).

There's only the two. The rest of the app. is similar to the KCOM app.

Anyone heard anything about interviews? I think they may have cancelled the december interview day. It is soooo hard to get ahold of them!!

That's strange..everytime I call, I get someone and they are really friendly..hmm..perhaps call again?

Did you get any info from the office? I wonder how long it will take them to review apps now since they are only planning on interviewing until April. I've only been complete since 12/22, and I don't think they have looked at my app yet. I'd really like to interview there.

I have a question about Mesa that I can't find an answer to on their website. Maybe somebody on sdn knows. I understand that students will be going to CHCs after the first year. Will they also be doing rotations at hospitals like is done at all other medical schools? I don't see anything about the core and elective rotations in the 3rd and 4th years with Mesa. Even though they are focusing on producing primary care DOs, they still need those rotations to be effective. Does anyone have any info on that?

I don't think you have any rotations at hospitals. I think all of your time will be spent working/learning at the CHCs with clinicals and internet based teaching. That is what I have gathered from my talking with Mesa.

It seems like you will be at a disadvantage when taking the COMLEX without witnessing all the other aspects of patient care. Plus, to do primary care, you need to be more familiar with everything than you do in specialty care. I guess they expect you to get those rotations during residency.

As far as I know from the website and the open house all training after the first year will be done at the community health centers including rotations, so no hospitals.

Anyone know if they finally settled on the list of 10 Community Health Centers?

There will actually be 11 partnerships. They are:

Ohio (near Cincinnati)
Brooklyn, NY
Alabama (south of Montgomery)
So. Carolina (near Hilton Head)
Phx, AZ (American Indian preference)
Flagstaff, AZ
Tucson, AZ
California (so. of Fresno)
Oregon (near Portland)
Seattle, WA
Waianae, HI (on Oahu)

Where did you get the list from? Is this list finalized? Are they only going to let American Indians go to the CHC in Phoenix? Does this mean the first class will have 110 students instead of 100?

Do you know what part of Phoenix this may be? I heard Casa Grande was one of the proposed sites, so I was curious if that is the "phoenix" location?

Someone on the admin committee emailed me the info.

Those look like pretty good sites.

Does anyone know the turn around time for the app? Meaning, how long from being complete before they look over the app and offer an interview? Any new interview invites since the new year?

I hope their turnaround time is quick as I'm a nervous wreck waiting for their response. Did anyone receive any interview invites from them since December?
