Is it worth subscribing for the MSAR if you are just starting out pre-reqs? When is the right time to start gathering information about specific medical schools in general?

Not worth subscribing yet. You'll want it in the year before you pick your school list. A good time to buy it for most people would be around the time you finish the prereqs and start studying for the MCAT.

When you're just starting the prereqs all you need to know is that you should be shooting for straight As.

Though if you're curious, find your campus pre-health adviser or career services office. They often keep a fairly recent paper copy you can look at.
