Do you guys think that conducting research with my bio prof on insects, DNA sequencing, and bacterial infections of the insects would be acceptable research to med schools? It seems like awesome research to me and I'm going to do it regardless, but still, what do y'all think? Also, the prof is going to be submitting a journal article when this is all said and done. Thanks =D

Do whatever type of research you think you will enjoy! You can put it on your application and it makes you stand out.

My master thesis is on insect behavior -- and I got plenty of interviews this application year. 🙂

Do it, you don't have to complete medically-related research.

If you went through the art-history department and researched how an oil painting from the Renaissance era helped initiate the Battle of Let the Good Times Roll between the French and English, that would be suitable research.

A lot of human-relevant research is done on other model organisms-- even plants. Research what interests you.

A few of my interviewers have actually asked me about the research I do.

Some give me a look of "HOW THE HELL DO YOU TOUCH THAT THING?!?!"

and some just avoid the subject -- one even want me to change the subject when I brought it up

yeah, I love my model organism.

What is it? A giant slug or snail?

I worked on drosophila and damselflies... no one seemed to care on my interviews.

Research is desirable to medical schools because it (hopefully) shows a curiosity in the individual to explore the unknown and create new knowledge, and gives students an understanding of how the science and knowledge underlying medicine is furthered and created. Everyone else is right, if you choose to do research it doesn't matter what field it's in.
