Greetings all. I've been reading these boards intermittently since I've been considering applying to Carriebean Medical Schools. Now, I'm relatively new here too, so if the question I'm about to ask can be or has been effectively covered in an old thread/post/topic - then I apologize in advance.
I have a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with a cumulative GPA of 2.85. I've worked as an engineer for a full year before the "Day of Reckoning" (lay-off). I returned to school to fulfill some missing pre-med courses, namely Organic Chemistry. I'm currently enrolled in an MCAT prep course and am registered to take them this April.
Why the Caribbean? Well - 3 things.
1) I'm not getting any younger and the route that I'd have to take to try and make it State-side will inevitably suck the very life from me...this entails returning for a Masters and trying to pull that GPA over the 3.0-3.2 threshold.
2) As stated above, competetition for acceptance doesn't seem as cutthroat as the US schools and that the educational value/content is similar (as I found perusing through valueMD.com). Of course, then there's the question of loans, but the thing I'm worried about right now is admission.
3) NJ weather = crap...especially at this time of year.
I've also worked as an EMT (vollie and paid) and have 6 years of direct patient contact/care under my belt. Drawing mostly from that experience, I've got my heart set on pursuing Emergency Medicine. I want to be in the "front lines" getting my hands, feet, and scrubs bloody (sorry - that's paramedic cowboy lingo slipping in). The real reason I'm pursuing this is because I know I will truly enjoy it and I'll be great at it. Let's say it's more of a passion than a goal....and pushing pencils and staring at CAD drawings inside a small cubicle for a year after college drove it home all the more.
So, what's the question?
Basically it's this...do I have a good shot into the top 3 in the Caribbean?
Thanks. 👍
