I'm a senior, planning to take 2 gap years and apply in 2027.

In fall 2024, I copied an assignment in my physics lab. The answers matched those from the year prior, so I was caught and was reported, along with some other students in the class. I accepted the sanction, still ended the class with an A. My uni holds records for 5 years.

Of course, I deeply regret this now, but what's done is done. My question is, what is the extent to which this will affect my application? Should I even bother applying? I'm on track to graduate with a 3.9 as a biology major, and I still need to take my MCAT.

Any insight please would be appreciated.

You should be OK as long as you own it, and don't screw up again.

Work with your Student Conduct Office and prepare statements regarding your IA, even if you are not required to report the action.

May I ask why you think the student will be fine? Time since incident, type of IA?

May I ask why you think the student will be fine? Time since incident, type of IA?

We were all young and stupid once, and given the time between the incident and applying, the OP will hopefully be more mature, and have learned from the incident.

It depends. Usually, and it can be ignored if it occurred during the first two years of undergrad.

The students have to maintain an excellent record following the ia.

Keep in mind not all cheating is alike. I remember someone who posted about getting caught after opening up a professor's computer and looking at exam answers. That person killed their medical school chances.

I interviewed someone who was caught after he had a friend take an exam for him, and then got suspended for a year. We did not accept him. We did not accept them even if he did a graduate degree at my University in one of our other programs.

Thanks for the reply. I’m getting ready to apply this upcoming cycle and I’m just worried about the timing and nature of my IA. I know you gave an answer already to my post but I just wanted (reassurance)?

It depends upon when it occurred in your academic career. Doing it while as a senior is different from when you're a a freshman.

But me personally I would treat it a little more seriously, but it also depends upon how you write about it, and what you did it, if anything to remediate this

If you attended K-12 school in the United States (and arguably anywhere else in the world as a child), you were constantly warned never to look at another student's exam. Many schools run on student honor codes in which unproctored exams are common. I don't quite get why you get an IA for just glancing at a neighbor's paper/exam without more of the story.
