Institutional Action(How will it affect my chances?)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don't lie about it...and it probably won't hurt you.

It'll probably come up in interviews - just make sure to explain it very well to the adcom.

Good luck with your apps!

I know this is going to sound dumb but during my freshman year of undergrad I smoked spice which is an herbal incense that was legal at the time. I started to vomit, hallucinate, had an increased heart rate so I went to the hospital . The school found out and placed me on non-academic probation for two semesters and I was also required to take drug abuse classes and complete 100 hours of community service. I have a 3.95gpa, 32O mcat, and I am a URM with tons of extracurricular activities. How will this incident affect my chances? Please be brutally honest. Thanks

Dude. You're fine. Be forthcoming with it. It was LEGAL at the time. Which actually makes me think you're a troll, come to think of it.

If it's LEGAL, the school can't take action against you.... can they?

If it was legal at the time, why would the school take action at all? 😕

Well, being openly gay is perfectly legal but until recently the army could take institutional action against you if you were 🙂

More relevantly though, plenty of schools have codes of conduct that you might violate even though they involve legal activities. Loma Linda anyone?

Lol.

Yeah Loma Linda... no thanks.

Schools have policies and will write up students who can legally drink for school rules regarding alcohol in the dorms, in the presence of minors, etc.

Be forthcoming about your IA but it is unlikely that it will hurt your chances of admission.

Beat me to it. Students at my school who needed to be transported to the hospital for overindulgence in alcohol, even if of age, faced IA.

I'm not trolling. I attend a methodist university that does not allow drinking or smoking on campus and if you are under the influence of any substances that the school deems a drug then there will be IA. The school is so strict that we do not even have opposite sex visitation in our dorm rooms.

Transfer and get a life.

Seriously, transfer. Unless you enjoy that stuff.

My mother always says, "Consider the source." If a med school recognizes that you got written up for drinking, smoking or dancing 😱 at a religious school, they are sure to be generous in cutting you some slack.

Dude - my school had similar policies - such as, no opposite-sex students in your room after 11pm b******. It happened all the time. There is a stark contrast between a rule/law and its enforcement. Is your school really heavy on the enforcement side? I bet they just have a loud bark with no bite. IMHO

LOL @ a reaction to spice. That's like drinking a Miller Light and getting blood poisoning.
