Man, you really got screwed on that one.

You should tell the whole story as plainly as possible. You are being cautious about appearing defensive, rightly so, but that doesn't mean they should think it was worse than it was. You should probably mention all of those mitigating factors, but also explain that you learned a lot from it (be specific about what you learned and make it sound mature). And then try to forget all about it and not get too hung up on it since it hopefully shouldn't be a big deal if you are an awesome candidate otherwise.

Is there any way you can prove that you were not in the state when the violation occurred?

Hey y'all would really like some input on this. I have an IA from January 2014. My roommates smoked pot in our on campus apartment before going out and our room was inspected after they left. I was staying over at a friends place in another state but because they found marijuana in the room and none of my roommates would admit its was their's we were all given Marijuana violations, 6 months probation, 80 hours community service and random drug testing by our university. Obviously this is an IA and i really have no intention of misrepresenting it and in fact plan to just state i received a marijuana violation and not even mention the part about the roommates. I guess my question is how bad is this gonna be?

Also i should mention the drugs were in a communal area thus they had no choice but to give us the IA since no one would confess
Very common event, and we were all young and stupid once. Even if it was YOUR pot!

Just admit to having bad choices in room mates, and how you're keeping your nose clean.
