Is it insulting when asking someone that you've shadowed or had for a course or know well if you can write the letter of rec for them should they not have any time. i asked a friend of mine, who's a journalism/economics major who is in no way applying to medical school about this and he said the times he's asked for letters from professors they came out and said write it and i'll sign it. Just wanted to know because the doctor I am going to be shadowing soon is pretty busy and I doubt he, or many doctors for that matter, have the time to write a good letter these days.

I had a doctor write me a very good lor and he's pretty busy. I think they understand the importance of a good letter. If you take the time to get to know them, and spend some time with one; they should "if they think you'll be a good doc" take care of you. I know that in the future if I were to be asked for a lor I will go the extra mile if I think the student will make a good doctor.

Don't offer to write the letter, but if they ask you to, then do what you think is best.

I have a question about this LOR bussiness...
Do you guys read them? I thought your not supposed to read them. Does it matter if you read them?

I am about to get 2 new LORs into my bank (interfolio) and one if from my boss at work and the other is from the doctor I shadowed over the summer

Well you only read them if your letter write wants you to. One of my husband's professors wanted him to write the letter and then the prof would read it and sign it. Obviously my husband knows whats in it. Also one of my letter writers wanted me to have a copy of the letter so he gave me a couple extra in sealed envelopes but I have not read it even though he doesn't mind. We both still signed the waiver for the letters to be confidential.
