I have to purchase my own insurance next year when I turn 25. I am currently under my parents' insurance. It will not be through my employer, as I will still be in school. Anyway, would I still maintain the same level of coverage, if I get my insurance through the same provider? For example, would the insurance cover surgery for a pre-existing condition (that would have been covered under my parents' insurance) when I first switch over to my own insurance?

What state do you live in? In many states insurance companies are required to provide insurance coverage through age 29. This is fairly new. As an example, in Florida it was enacted in 2008. Remember, when you look at the IRS website they are concerned with tax deductability and claiming dependency exemptions, etc. I just quickly did a search and found statecoverage.org and it has useful inforrmation. If I can be of help, let me know. Hope this helps.

I thought that with the advent of the new healthcare bill, you are still able to be put on your parents' insurance until 27.

Is it when you turn 25 or the year of your 25th birthday, which could mean December 2010?

Be sure to check the company's wording before you buy a policy that you may not need!

(I have coverage until age 25. But my 25th birthday was months ago, so I should have it until I turn 26... but I may even have coverage throughout the year that I turn 26, until December 2010.)
