Hi everyone, I've been away from SDN for a little while but am back! If anyone has questions about the integrated vascular surgery programs send me a message! I'll be happy to answer any questions or guide you to someone who can!

Peripheral Vascular Society has also recently (very recently) developed a Facebook page and is a good source for questions as many program directors and current residents/fellows may be able to answer questions directly. Just request to add as a friend. If you have any trouble, just contact me.

I am interested to know:
Is there a Step I score cut-off for interviews?
Are the integrated programs getting the first and second year residents guaranteed operating time because the training is not as long?
Do the programs have difficulty competing for the minimally invasive procedures with other specialties: Rads, cardiology?

At least at our institution the board scores ranged from 215-260. The majority were in the range of 225-250. I believe if you have a two digit score of 90, that is respectable. If you did average on step 1, take step 2. If you did well on step 1, you don't have to take step 2.

It may be institution dependent but my case total for intern year was 80...mixed vascular and general surgery. All the integrated programs have enough volume or they would not be approved by the RRC to start an integrated program. At our institution, most of our fellows and soon residents I think will get their numbers before they even start their chief year.

Do the programs have difficulty competing for the minimally invasive procedures with other specialties: Rads, cardiology? Nope. IR depends on referrals for vascular cases which vasc surg do themselves now. Again highly institution dependent, but we do all the peripheral endo (carotid, SFA, renal, etc), and think this is similar nationwide. Cards does mostly all coronaries.

Hope this helped. Other resources to look at (I just answered a ton of questions for the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society Facebook Page; just request to "Become A Fan" and click on Discussion.

Google Vascular Web which is the Society for Vascular Surgery Website which also may have some info.

You can also PM if you have further questions....
