okay so UCSD asks this question in their supplemental- Sharing intellectual interest is an important aspect of professional life. Describe a book, class, or activity that you find intellectually exciting and specify your reasons.

I wanted to write about piano and music.. but do you think thats intellectual? i mean it is a form of art and expression, which is more emotional than rational.. is that not intellectual?

You could, but I'm not sure that's what the adcom is looking for. Just ask yourself: Am I putting my best effort out writing about this topic?

this is just an open ended type question where you can let your personality shine a bit. If you can talk about piano and music in a way that shows another side to you, then by all means. If your response is 'my mom forced us to learn piano and now i play well' then that's not really saying much about you.
how does piano affect your life in a positive way? has it given you some insight or help you overcome any obstacles?

it's just another way for them to see you as a person instead of an applicant.
Good Luck, cheers

creestoL - actually, this could be a really good essay if you are willing to do a little work.

Many musicians are tremendously competent mathematicians & vice versa. I found this surprising when I discovered it & if you pursue some of the most productive researchers in medicine & what they do for relaxation --- is music.

Apparently, the reason is the mind proceses the music in the same areas of the brain...this is where you need to get involved in music theory, mind processing of music, etc....to find out the specifics...

But...definintely - music & science go together more rationally than you'd expect. And...altho it can be played for your own enjoyment alone, it can be shared & worked on with others.

Good luck - I think the adcoms are looking directly at people like you....you just need to make this an essay which is as much about who you are & what you like to do as what music is & how it affects our brains & becomes therapy, for the player as much as the listener.

Have fun!

I think it could be a completely workable essay depending on what your interest in music is. You could have a large interest in famous composers and the history or genius of their compositions. You may enjoy composing yourself which certainly is intellectual. Perhaps even your motivations for your interest in music or piano are based upon some intellectual curiosity. In short, music and intellectual interests are not always mutually exclusive and its for you to decide how to tie the two together. Good Luck!

Go for it! I was once a music major and had to do a similar essay so yes, it can be done! Think about what you love about the piano and why. Jot down some reasons and then make it sparkle!
