I am taking my first bio class as an undergrad and I didn't think it would be hard. And for the most part it isn't. However my professor seems to "glaze" over some parts in chapters claiming that they are not important to the subject matter we are learning now. Then I see something like this: C6H12O6 + 6 O2 -> 6 H20 + 6 CO2 + energy in the text and don't understand exactly what is going on. He never covers anything like this just a more broad concept. I am doing well in the class, memorizing terms and what not but I just feel like I'm going to get to my next one and be completely blindsided by not knowing any of the specific material.

Is this a valid concern? The other students I have talked to say I'm stressing out over nothing. I am very math-minded, those are my best subjects and most of my professors there give us a very specific way of solving a given set of problems and let us do them. I feel I learn better with this approach, I like to know all the specifics.

If you're doing well don't worry about it, I always found bio to be a lot easier than the upper level math and physics classes. You're probably just waiting for it to get really complicated and math-like, but it never does haha. All that gets harder about it is it goes more and more in detail over time, but your rote memorization tends to improve as the classes have more details to memorize.

So its not a big deal that I don't yet know some of those element structures?

No every bio class takes the same information you're learning now and goes further and further in detail.

Thanks guys! I've been stressing all week... like losing sleep stressing. :/

That's how I felt in intro bio. Don't worry, it'll all make sense in the future if you stick with it.

Things like I bolded are more chemistry related than biology. You will understand more about the equation when you have chem. 🙂

But just to answer your concern, the equation you wrote is all about taking sugar (C6H12O6) and combining it with oxygen (O2) and making water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to make energy. It is called aerobic respiration. You should know the process and describe the parts, but knowing more detail comes later in molecular bio or biochem.

Like many said before, know what the prof says is important and don't worry about the rest. General bio is a place to get the basics, the details will come in the upper division classes you will take later.

Good luck with your journey.

That reaction is a brief summary of the overall process (which is pretty interesting after you take biochem and have pretty good knowledge of organic chem). Biology may seem hard, but seems like you're good. Relax and tackle the courses accordingly.
