Hello everyone in "SDN"

Im would like to tell you more about myself. My name is Donald. Im Fifteen this year and I live in Malaysia (ASIA). Over the years, I've been thinking on what to do in my life and finally I found out what I want. I said to myself i want to be a Doctor. Why do I want to become a doctor? There are many reasons, I like to save people. I do believe in Karma (If you help one, in your next life you will be blessed), I love to see the smile on one's face. Medicine seem so interesting, doing surgeries and much more. For the past years, I scored excellent grades for Science and Math.

At this moment in time, I would like to ask, Im right now 15 years old and Im starting to do my GCSE this September in Shrewsbury, UK. I would love to know more about Medicine, what should I do to prepare. What can I do to widen my knowledge in this field.

I know about BMAT examination, but not that much.

Any tips on what should I do?

Hey man, don't worry about your english, it's actually better than a lot of native speakers and I don't think anything at all actually stood out. As far as medical education abroad, I am not sure what the requirements are exactly. Are you planning on coming to Medical school in the United States? If so, you will need to get a bachelor's degree (regular, undergraduate university degree) and then get an MD from a medical school. As far as widening your knowledge of the field, one of the best things to do is to shadow, or follow, a doctor around while he is at work. You might be too young to begin this but I am not sure about what things are like abroad. Go ahead and call some hospitals and tell them you are interested in shadowing and see what they say. Welcome to SDN!

If you are studying in the UK, then you should probably talk to an advisor at a college there. UK has a different path to being a physician than in the US. US is longer and more expensive than UK, but you make more money. I am not sure about the international status of a US doc vs a UK doc. I am pretty sure that a US doc can practice anywhere in the world. I am not sure if it is the same for UK (I think that it would be). Pretty much everyone here is in the US.

I looked at wikipedia:

US program
Bachelor's Degree (4 years)
Medical school (4 years)
Residency (3-5 years)
Fellowship (optional 1-4 years)

UK program

Medical school-start at age 18 or 19 (5 years)
(graduate as a bachelor of medicine)
Foundation House Officer (2 years)
specialty registrar (3 years for General Practice, 6 years for specialty)

Note: in the UK, the MD is a research based degree (similar to a PhD) as opposed to a professional degree in the US.
