Hey guys. I'm very, very interested in PM&R. Especially musculoskeletal and neuro issues (which I guess covers it all lol).

I am going into psych, but I plan on spending a good portion of my career researching and working on the psych side of rehabilitation and physical disability.

But even though I don't plan on doing the residency, I do want to be reasonably competent in understanding the medical perspective on these issues. I already ahve a pretty good understanding of how kinesiologists/CSCSs look at these issues.

Are there books or online resources you'd recommend?

eMedicine has a section for PM&R that has some pretty good article. just listing that cuz it's free.

Braddom's PM&R talks about the psych issues in many of the chapters.

Wall and Melzack's Textbook of pain goes into a lot of the pschology of pain.

Spend some time on a brain injury or CVA ward and you'll learn a lot more about how the brain works and the pschology of rehab than you will from any book.

Psychiatry?

There is a huge breadth encompassed within physiatric "musculoskeletal and neuro issues".

I would NOT suggest a text or articles at this time, and recommend instead to wait until you have a bit more clarity regarding the issues you are interested in understanding.

I should probably be more clear. I am interested in learning more about how PM&R approaches the patient with musculoskeletal and/or neurologic deficits. How they diagnose, and how they treat.

I am interested in working with people on the psych side of musculoskeletal and neurological impairment, mostly in how psychiatric care can help augment the response to therapy. But in order to really understand that topic, I need to understand how yall approach therapy...

I am interested in it all, from peripheral nerve damage to brain injury, to spinal dysfunction, to muscular imbalance.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for the suggestions by the way.
