what is the best way to let programs know u are interested in them? how can u tell how interested they are in you? once u get the interview at competitive places like columbia and northwestern what are the odds of actually matching there?

I'll answer your first 2 questions only because I can't answer the last one...

If you like a program, send a thank you card. And be specific - eg "I really liked your program, I think it would be a good place for me" maybe give some specifics. If you know a place is your #1 choice, tell them. If you tell more people (all the residents you met with, the interviewers AND the program director, it can only help you.

One way to tell if a program is interested in you is if you get a request for a second look. Or if you get lots of feedback from them, like direct responses from residents or program directors.

Good luck!
