Unfortunately I got the dissappointing news of a failure on step 1 last week. Obviously I'm quite dissappointed in the results but I really did well on my psych clinical rotations and plan to take step 1 again.

Can anyone share info on how to proceed considering I have this nice new tarnish on my CV or if this failure will keep me out of a psych residency. Not to mention I am an IMG🙁

Sorry to hear that happened to you. While it might pose a problem if you had your sights set on the most selective programs, I think you'll still be able to find programs that will give you a chance. In many of my interviews, it seemed like programs are more concerned with if you seem like someone who will be easy to work with and if you're mentally stable (yes, really) rather than test scores or grades. If you can figure out what caused this to happen and fix that issue on your re-take, I think you'll be fine. 🙂

Agree with the above. Its of course very frustrating to fail an exam that you most likely put a lot of work into. I can't say its going to help you, & as mentioned above may knock you out of some of the top programs.

However you still can get into several residencies of good quality even with a failed USMLE on your record. I've seen quite a few get into top quality fellowships with their USMLE scores or having a failure having almost no bearing.
