Hey guys,

I am currently a freshman trying to find a major I think I would enjoy so I am planning to visit a few classes to see what they are like such as business, philosophy, psychology, etc.

Are there any majors I should try and stay away from unless I am really up for the challenge and I enjoy them? Some I can think of are Engineering, Physics, and Math.

Any other ideas? What are your views on Psychology or Philosophy?

I personally find psychology really interesting.
I'm currently majoring in psychology while taking the premed requirements.

Well, it is kind of hard for others to tell you what you would be interested because that obviously varies by person.

Stay away from? The only one I would really warn against would be nursing... engineering and physics are obviously GPA killers, but not really "off limits."

Pick something you like, can do well in, and if it provides some sort of back up plan than that is a plus as well.

This. Other than that, I can't recommend any "fancy" ones (my institution doesn't offer a neuroscience major, for example) but I'm double majoring Psychology and Biology, can't say much about philosophy but if you're interested in social sciences areas like that then definitely give them a try.

Yeah I am really interested in Psychology and Philosophy. It's just I don't read in my spare time and I am not a fan of writing essays and all. However I really think I like the logic behind it all. So while I love it, I don't think I'd be able to do well in it which therefore brings my GPA down. I am good at sciences, but not as interested.

I entered college knowing I wanted to study computer science and taking art classes but ended up double majoring with art history after falling in love with the subject. Medicine or not I think you should find something you are passionate about genuinely. A med-aspiring colleague of mine is involved in Tibetan Buddhism. If you ask me the best part of undergrad is exploring the liberal arts. If you are interested in psych and philosophy then go for it.

Hmm do you guys know of an online survey or test which can better tell you what sort of major to go for based on the answers I give to questions?

I am a double major in biology and Psych with a minor in religious studies. I love it.

Do what seem like fun while taking the pre recs. Humanities majors with great grades in pre recs and a few up level science class always seem to give Ad coms the WTF moment. This many increase their desire to meet you but of course this isn't worth it if you hate Humanities.

Pick a major of interest and you will be more likly to do well.

Math is awesome!

Indeed it is. I just think I am not confident in myslf to be able to do well in any one major regardless if I like it or not. I mean I enjoy chemistry and biology and they are my strong point. I just want to do something different if I am able to, but anything in Arts is sort of my weak spot. I just dont want to do something that I like, but will kill my GPA as a result. I am trying to find a medium.

you are way ahead of yourself on this one as a first semester college student. No one is forcing this decision on you, and teh internetz isn't going to be a whole lot of help on this one, because we don't know anything about where you go to school. maybe your physics department is small and hella awesome. maybe Psych is huge, impersonal and impossible to get involved with research.

point is, the solution for someone like you is to spend your first two years taking a wide variety of courses, with any departments you think you might be interested in. not only does this give you the best sense of what you think you should be doing, but it executes perfectly on what medical schools are always telling us they look for: intellectually curious people with broad interests. even if you decide not to major in a subject, some of these courses will be the ones you remember most fondly because of the great professor you had, or because the material taught you to see the world in a different way.

I think that a subject like philosophy or art history would be excellent for a pre-medical student. Psychology is another good option, but remember that psychology is a science. One will rarely hear about anything but science during medical school and residency. In addition, classes like Biopsychology or Abnormal Psychology are not especially difficult, and their content will almost certainly be covered in medical school by psychiatry or neurology courses.

Anthropology. A lot of people don't know what it actually is, so it might be something interesting to look into.

if you like math, try statistics. its more applicable to medicine (or just about any field) and though alot of people take intro stats and that can be boring once you get into upper level applied statistics it gets really interesting. also, you can find alot of research opportunities and publish fairly quickly as an undergrad.

I'll second that. My anthropology and archeology courses were definately some of the most interesting.

I like to read philosophy and to discuss philoshophy, but my impression of it as a major is that it is designed to chew up and spit out people who don't have volumes of interesting new ideas in the field lurking inside them to write about.

Im doing the exact same and I'm love it

YOu don't have to declare a major until Junior year (or 90 quarter credits) at most institutions. Obviously you need to take your pre-reqs, so take some other classes as well (i.e., social science) and maybe you'll stumble upon something you'll love.

I wouldn't suggest relying on online major tests (as you asked about in another post). They may not even consider a major you will enjoy. Also, the majority of those tests will answer what career you should pursue rather than a major.

If you think you're interested in philosophy and psych, take an intro psych class and an intro or bioethics philosophy class. Explore. 🙂
