We had an interesting surgery at work today...

We had a little stray kitten in that needed an enucleation. So, the doctor started to perform the procedure, and instead of a tumor, pulled out a huge cuterebra! It was so freaky. One of the staff members took some pics and I thought you all might like to see them.

Oh, and the kitten was picked up by the county shelter folks today. Her eye was still kind of flat, but they think she will do well aside from some scar tissue.

WOW! Awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing!

Big nasty parasites in places they shouldn't be. Blech! 😱 I have hated those things ever since I was in elementary school and my dog killed a squirrel. Two of those crawled out of the carcass! Where's that barf icon when I need it? Anyways, I bet the kitty feels a lot better!

Hey, we've had a bunch of those recently, the doc I work with says that it's their season right now. Thanks for the pics, I hope the kitty does well!

that thing is reallly gross...😱 I've never seen one of those...where do they come from? Was it right behind the kitten's eye?

You may have also called by their other name, the bot fly. There's been a couple random Animal Planet/National Geographic Channel type programs on parasitic flies, worms, including these guys, in humans, etc. Nasty.

Don't forget "warble," electrophile. That's what we call them in my area. Apparently they can get kinda bad around here, but I haven't seen any yet.

I HATE THESE THINGS, last year I went to my boyfriend's redneck family party and they're all like "Ratbandit there's something wrong with our fleabag uneutered matted nasty kitten! Can you look?" I had never seen one of these before but the kitten had this big hole in its neck and I was just like omg I think there is something alive in there...of course we took it to the vet the next day, payed the bill plust got its shots and prepaid for it to get neutered. She said they get the larvae from hanging around rodent dens. I come back this year and now this poor cat has abscesses all over its paws from fighting and is still uneutered so once again I have to take this thing in to the vet - they actually remembered him as the "Grub Kitten."

Thanks for sharing! We should start an "interesting case" thread. You never know, we might see something here and sound "half" intelligent if we see it in person while working!

In our case, the nasty bug was in front of the eyeball, pushing it back. One of our doctors, though, said the kitten was actually lucky as he has seen them get behind the eye and push through it (shudder)!

I know this is probably an incredibly naive question, so forgive me, but was the eye able to be saved? Or did that have to come out, too?

Happily, the eye was saved. It was just squished flat. They are very hopeful that the kitten will have no future problems other than some scar tissue 🙂.

Very cool case! I know I've heard you can find warbles in other species, including horses (is that when they're commonly called bot flies?). I've only ever seen these cooties in rabbits (tush area, each time when I've seen).

i can handle maggots, but this is just nauseating! :barf:

i don't know why but I love bot flies and maggots...im weird i guess lol! I remember that this one vet i worked with said that when she was a prevet/tech a doctor pulled a prank on her and told her this huge detailed story about how when you pull a bot ply out you can put it in their ear and it fits because thats where they crawl in...and she believed it .... so every time she sees one she gets all giddy and excited because she remembers the prank....i guess its contagious!

I'm originally from the Northwest and have seen a couple of those in cats, usually back by the shoulder blade. It was always fun to show the owners who were like " You pulled WHAT out of my cat!!" The gross out factor was unbeatable. Well, that is until I had to flush maggots out of a recently dehorned calf hornbud. Yeah, didn't eat rice for a while. :barf:

Eeeww...That is really gross, but interesting. I feel sorry for the kitty though, poor thing. Parasites are interesting but that one looks really nasty :S. Intersting though.

This is why I love ivermectin.

my friend's cat had one diagnosed on MRI of the BRAIN!!!! TWICE!!!!! as in TWO SEPERATE TIMES!!!

Thanks for sharing, VeganChick! The day after I sent this to one of the shelter vets where I work, we had to remove one from the scrotum of a rabbit who had come in to be neutered. She said that it was all my fault.

Disgusting, yet cool.... 😎
