Interesting video w/ ADA president

Well, now that all you loan borrowers know there's a mal-distribution across the country and poor people waiting in the freezing rain for dental care, you can go out and take advantage of federal loan repayment programs while working in those under served areas, all while feeling a positive sense of giving to your country's dentally challenged. 😉

I have to wonder if it's really about access, rather people just not giving a crap about their oral health (and paying for it). Kind of had trouble figuring out the goal of that newscast... get people more aware of the importance of going to the dentist? Get new dentists/students to practice in under served areas? Get the people in power to do something about it? Or was it just informational (albeit stuff that I thought was somewhat common knowledge)?

Only other thought that comes to mind is, that I wish I'd applied to UCSF.

If the gov offers to pay off students loans and offer cheap (~1-2% interest rates) practice loans to dentists to practice in these areas it may help fix the problem. Another thing to fix might be increasing medicaid reimbersment by covering less people via merit and means testing.

If they're not going to do that I hope they STAY OUT OF DENTISTRY!

PS: Though, I think it's more of an issue of people not wanting to pay for dentistry. I wonder how much of that 50% took the time and effort to maintain their teeth by getting regular cleanings, exams, and home oral care. If they're not doing that... why should they be covered by things like medicaid? Maybe there should be a "complience" clause prior to receiving medicaid funding for more serious problems.

".........some students don't want to practice in shortage areas because of financial reasons......"

Gee whiz.....who woulda thunk it. I guess....sooner or later......you gotta pay the rent.

I wonder if this reporter will keep doing these reports if she wasn't getting paid?
