I read somewhere on this forum that someone was using interfolio.com instead of their school's premedical office. I went to a college that doesn't offer a premedical committee, doesn't offer a premedical office. Actually, my alma mater really doesn't offer much premedical support because it only employs one biology professor and hasn't sent a graduate to medical school in many, many years. I was hoping to use interfolio.com to collect my recommendations, so my recommenders won't have to keep writing a new recommendation for each school I apply to. I'm on my third round of requesting letters and it's getting tiring. What are your opinions?

I chose to go the Interfolio route. Some of my friends didn't, and they are really scrambling to make sure that their letter writers got all the copies mailed and some are having to go back for more copies after they've added additional schools. With Interfolio, I just select my schools and the letters I want sent and it's done.

Nearly all schools want a privacy release with each letter but Interfolio allows you to file a privacy release with each letter and I've done that (by the way, if you waive your right to see the letter, Interfolio won't let you see it, either). Some of my letter writers didn't know how to address a "generic" letter and I asked them to address it "Dear Admissions Committee:"

It's been a very positive experience and, given what we're spending on everything else, not expensive. All of my allopathic/osteopathic schools accepted Interfolio without any problem. I have been told that a couple of osteopathic schools won't accept Interfolio, but I didn't experience that and can't confirm it.

I am applying to PCOM, LECOM-B, NYCOM, UNECOM, and UMDNJ. All of them said it would be ok when I called them. Some people say that you may be questioned on why you did not use your premed committee. For you that is an easy answer.

No school has given me any problems about getting LORs from interfolio. When the search function was working I searched interfolio many times and not once did anyone say that their LORs were not accepted by an allopathic or osteopathic schools. Many times I saw that people chose interfolio because of a slow/inept premed office.

None of my professors had a problem with using interfolio. I provided them with addressed, stamped large envelopes. I also explained the waiver to them so they would feel comfortable with the process.

I paid the $75 fee in case I have to reapply next year and everything is on file for 5 years. 3 free mailings too. I called and emailed interfolio and they were very fast in responding and were very helpful. mailed LORs took 5 days(from NY to DC) to get into the system from the day it was mailed out. Once it took about 10 days but I think my LOR writer lied about when he sent my LOR.

Very happy with the service!!

I also used Interfolio.com. It is a great service. It saves a lot of time and stress. You can readily send your LORs out at anytime and know for sure it'll get there. Whereas, if you keep on bugging your LOR writers to send their letters to each schools as you receive their secondary applications your LOR writers might be slow on sending them out or completely "forget" to. Using Interfolio.com puts you in control.

Another positive is you can choose to save your LORs for as long as you want with Interfolio.com. This way if you have to apply again you can reuse your LORs. For those applying to the Carribean schools you can easily do that without telling your LOR writers and having them frown upon that. NOTE: There's nothing wrong with attending a Carribean medical school.
