Just thought Id post my experience as a little light in the forums. Im starting school in two weeks, so I have been hunting for intern jobs the past month or so. Done a few online apps, made a few phone calls, and done straight visits and handing of resumes. I had been in contact with a DM at a Smith's (Kroger) chain for a little over a year, and although he never found a spot for me, he did give me the chance to shadow at a friends indy pharmacy which was a great experience. I had few good experiences with Pharmacy managers, some cold ones, and probably had about 12 resumes in. Well I ended up stopping in one of the Smiths pharmacies to give the manager there a resume and meet her in person, and they asked what hours I was looking at, she told me what they were looking for, and interviewed me on the spot! I called back 3 days later to follow up and got the job, now just waiting for HR to call and set stuff up! There is still chances out there, you have to be dedicated to look for them though. Also, I have no tech experience, only 6 months of shadowing. It can be done!

Good Job. Easier than a downslope fairway bunker shot to an elevated green protected by water 200 yards away..right?

forgot to ask... do you have a lot of non-pharmacy work experience?

Well, thats better than being against the burm and also clearing a tree making it a blind shot 😛

So my work experience is very non pharmacy related...2 years as a relay operator and 4 years as an electric motor technician. I did have 6 months pharmacy shadowing and volunteer hours with the red cross and hospital to go with it.

Congrats on an awesome job nailing that Internship!

Now go link this to every one of the "I can't find an internship because I'm lazy and uncreative" threads in the forum.

Hard work + intelligence = job security

Congrats 👍

I too had to work very hard to get my pharmacy internship. I called at least 40 local pharmacies around the big city that I live in when I'm home for the summer, and finally found a good one at a grocery store. It took me 4 months of constant communication and patience with the very nice pharmacy manager at this grocery store to get my job. I had no prior pharmacy experience, have had a great summer internship and have learned so much. Believe in what the others are saying about dedication and hard work.

technically took me 12 months to get my current inpatient intern position, then again i was really picky and my applications came in two waves (one wave at month zero, and then another wave at months 6 and 8). i got rejections half the time (the other half no response even after f/u) stating the issue was budgetary and to check back after the FY ends.

didn't make any calls to retail/independents and strictly hit up inpatient sites. the market is philadelphia w/ 3 schools (USP, Temple, Jefferson). even further limited my search to within the city limits.

definitely can be done, just gotta have the magic touch (ie don't obsessively call the same DOP and look like a stalker, don't be awkward, etc...)

Which Smith's did you get on at? I got an intern job at a hospital but I was hoping to get some intern experience in retail pharmacy.

Sorry for the delay, just got internet back up at our new place in midvale. Im at the Smiths marketplace on 33rd S off of 215.

Had my first full day in the pharmacy and loved it! The PiC is awsome, and the rest of the staff is great. The average script count is 2100/week from what I was told, so it was busy, but not overwhelming. The easy fill RPN program is pretty nice, not too hard to use or learn.

Now im just waiting for my intern license to get to me so i can make 15$/hr instead of 9$/hr as a "clerk".

15/hr as an intern? I guess it makes sense since you're out in NV.

bob. From what Trankuil said, I'm quite sure he/she is in Utah.

Trankuil. Congrats on the job! I'm searching for one myself, while waiting for my license. You're at USN SoJo right? If that Smith's happen to need more interns, hook me up friend! 🙂

Yep in utah 😉

And yes Hitagi, im at USN SoJo. Are you at the UofU? Im pretty sure the Smiths im at is full now, they already have 2 other interns. I picked up a tuesday shift from 330-9 which ends up perfect for me. After I get a little more used to te system Ill start picking up shifts on weekends probably at other stores when people want days off.

If you want I can give you a few managers to talk to. I had a really good contact with a pharmacy manager in a fresh market, and was in line to meet the district manager in person, but didnt need to once I got the job at smiths.

is 15/hour bad for a 1st year intern? I thought it was about average. It increases every year. Its better than the 10.50 i made during the summer so im not complaining.

I made more than 15/hr as a tech at one point... I'd hope it would be a bit better than that

I'm at USN SoJo too. Nice to "meet" you!

Will you only be working once or twice a week? That's what I'm planning. If I can get a 8 or 10-hr shift on Saturdays, I will love my employer for a long time. And yes, please send me the contact info. I would really appreciate it! I'm running out to Target today to try my luck.:xf:

Many places give you a nice pay cut when you go from tech to intern. Intern pay is often fixed based on year in school with no consideration given to tech experience.

As to the too lazy/boring to get an intern job idea, I used the combination of a connection + service industry experience + a strong interview to land the first and only intern job I applied for. If you find the job, you can get your way in there, especially if you aren't picky about where that job is (in terms of both location and employer).

I've never seen a pay reduction going from tech --> intern. I have seen places where the increase was pennies though.

I've heard from a classmate that she got paid more as a hospital tech than she does as an intern.

good job getting the intern position.

It sucks they pay some interns peanuts. Beats the 9 bucks an hour, though.

Congrats, d00d!

You sure have a lot of connections! I guess that's what makes the world go round.
