Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Opportunity for July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026

Atrium Health/Wake Forest University School of Medicine

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Non-Categorical Internship
Department of Oral Medicine/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Charlotte, NC

Primary responsibilities:
  • Clinic: Faculty and resident clinic (M-F); ~3-4 days a week
  • OR: Either (1) assist OMFS faculty in trauma, orthognathic, pathology, reconstruction, TMJ, and complex dentoalveolar surgeries or (2) perform resident-appropriate surgeries with attendings assisting; ~2-3 days a week
  • Call: Home call covering service call, OMFS call, and/or facial trauma call at level 1 trauma center. On average 1 weekend a month of full facial trauma call and 1.5 weeks a month of OMFS call (shared between 3 interns).
  • Hospital: Manage inpatients at Atrium Health Carolina’s Medical Center Main Campus, Levine Children’s Hospital, and Atrium Health University City Health.

The Harlem Hospital OMFS program is an accredited 4-year OMFS Program in Harlem, New York. We practice full scope OMS and offer our residents the opportunity to serve patients in an exciting, fast-paced, and highly diverse environment. Harlem Hospital is a busy Level 2 trauma center that still accepts the majority of level one traumas in the area. The service covers facial trauma of the hospital 24/7/365. The program has a history of matching its own non-categorical interns, and an overall very high match rate for residents in the last 4 years. We participate in the Match and offer 1 categorical position each year. We are looking for hard-working, self-motivated individuals to join our team this upcoming 2025-2026 year.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harlem Hospital Center is offer 3 non-categorical intern positions starting July 1st 2025

Please note: Eligible candidates must have completed a 1-year residency with valid certificate or have / be eligible to obtain a valid NY state dental license prior to starting.

By the end of this internship, you should be able to:

Assist in outpatient clinics by performing dentoalveolar procedures and identifying cases for the OR

Perform preoperative evaluation of surgery patients

Provide on call coverage and ER, OR and inpatient management of oral and maxillofacial surgery patients

Assist in the operating room and watch full-scope oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures

Perform venipuncture and various vascular access

Read and analyze labs and quantitative test

Read computed tomography for the head and neck region

Practice pharmacology and understand common drug-interactions

Perform a thorough history and physical

Evaluate the heart and lungs and assess problems with the TMJ using a stethoscope

Improve efficiency with dentoalveolar procedures

Address complications associated with dentoalveolar procedures

Participate in Grand Rounds and discussion of preoperative and postoperative of surgical patients

Participate in all resident academic activities and didactic departmental conferences

Practice communication in a hospital and team environment

Manage and teach general practice/pediatric dental residents in the hospital setting

Volunteer and provide outreach in a culturally and socioeconomically diverse and underserved community

Evaluate, diagnose, and treat common pathology to the head and neck region

Provide emergency dental care

Evaluate research articles and participate in discussions regarding the quality of the information presented

DENVER HEALTH Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Non-Categorical Opportunity 2025-2026

Denver Health, the original “knives and guns club”, is a Level 1 Trauma Center situated in the heart of downtown Denver. Our OMFS clinic is newly constructed and state of the art with beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains from the operatories. DH a mission driven safety net hospital with a goal of providing excellent care to all patients; we pride ourselves on our culture and strive to constantly improve. The scope of our program includes trauma (full face), dentoalveolar, non-malignant pathology & reconstruction, TMJ, orthognathic and trigeminal nerve repair.
Non-categorical responsibilities are equivalent to our PGY1 residents: staffing our busy out-patient dentoalveolar clinic, managing inpatients and taking primary call. Non-cats will have access to our new 3D printing lab and have opportunity to work on multidisciplinary research projects including in-house 3D surgical guides for trauma reconstruction. This one-year experience will give you the confidence and skills to take on any OMFS residency.
