intern year and residency in Ireland - thank you!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello,

I´m from Portugal (EU..=) and I´me doing one year of internship here. In December I´ll finish it and I´ll have a document saying I have a "medical basic formation". Is this enough to apply for a residency in a speciality?

What do I need to do to get my documents recognised?

And when do I have to apply to the residency?

I´ve read all previous posts but I didn´t understand if you have a national program to apply to teh speciality or if you have to search in each hospital..

Once you get admitted in a specialty you stay in the same place for all the time of your residency?

Thanks!!! :D

hello, im a n ewly graduated student from Romania and I would like to know how you got into an intern position in ireland as i want to try it out myself. Your information will really be helpfull. Thank you

Hi all,
I'm currently a british Doctor in England completing my first year (F1) in post graduate training, we do a two years covering 3, four month rotations each year. We have the opportunity to do our second year abroad if we can get a post that covers our training criteria. Does anyone know how might apply for a 1 year SHO job in a dublin hospital starting around August time I would need to do a couple of rotations within it, is there an organised allocation system or is it a job section in the paper kind of deal?:xf:

I would predict, given the happenings this year regarding NCHD pay, that it may become easier for those who would like to return home to Ireland and have EU status to do so. But know what you're walking into. At the moment, the government has cut the overtime pay you're able to receive which dramatically decreases your earnings. They have also cut a portion of the previous training grant. Essentially what this means is that now NCHDs are expected to work for free for nearly 20 hours per week (at least), as the work week was increased to 40-something hours but everyone works at least 60. Not a good time to be in the Irish workforce, with decreased benefits. However, as probably this will deter some of the foreign Irish-trained graduates, it may make it easier for EU people looking for spots. The difficulty here is that it's also becoming difficult for foreign graduates to secure jobs in their home countries.

So, how did things play out? What's the pay and overtime for interns now? Is it still an attractive financial proposition?

Is it getting easier for Irish trained overseas to return home for an internship year? What sort of things should they bullet point on their CVs?

Hi there,
I am a 3rd yr irish medical student studying in Slovakia.i want to(eventually) do my internship at home in ireland but after reading this page i am now worried that since the students who graduate in ireland will have first preferance i may not get a position.Should i be worried? What hospitals do u recommend applying to?Will the medical council take my grades into consideration?
If someone could help me with these questions i would be very grateful:)

I've meet people who are irish and didn't get into medicine in ireland so went to other EU countries to study, the only ones I've heard you got intern jobs in Ireland were the ones who had contacts i.e. family member was a Consultant or high up in HSE.
you should try and make as many contacts within Irish health system as possible perhaps doing an elective or two in an Irish hospital. I know one of the guys got a job as a porter and used his time to make contacts higher up and after 2 years got a spot (the was an irish citzen who spent most of his childhood in UK, he also spoke fluent irish and shocked the consultant who was interviewing him when he answered a question in Irish)

Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd sum up some of the recent changes in the Irish Intern year selection proccess.

The Intern year is the paid first post-graduate year program in medicine AND surgery required for registartion with the Irish Medical Council. At the moment, the selection of students for Intern postings is being evolved from the individual Universities (Trinity, RCSI, UCD, etc...) to a central agency.

To repeat, the details of the selection haven't yet been revealed officially. However, it has been hinted by the Administration of my college that the priority will be for EU Graduates from Irish medical schools > EU graduates from outside Ireland > non-EU graduates from Irish medical Schools > non-EU graduates from non-EU medical schools. Rankings within each of these catagories will supposedly be by final year grades.

This is a big change for Ireland, as most students studying in Ire. I know at my medical school non-EU medical students in studying in Ireland have been warned not to expect that spots will be available for them on graduation. My Adiministration estimates that after all of the EU students studying in Ireland are taken care of there will be about 100 spots left for the other catagories.

I'll try to post additional information as it becomes available.

hey jnuts what school are you at? i'm also from toronto and just want to know your thoughts on coming back to Canada after graduation. i start at rcsi in september

Sorry everone, I know this post isn't appropriate for this forum. Hopefully, my next post below will moderate that a bit.

Congrats! I'm also at RCSI in my 3rd year of the GEP program. You've kind of asked the elephantine question there. I've put a lot of information up here over the last little while about returning to Canada after Ireland; going back through my posting history might answer some of your questions.

In general, I think you're taking a small, but in my mind manageable, risk coming to Ireland given that the situation may be very different by the time you graduate. Judging by current trends that change is likely to be positive but might be negative if the unlikely occured and a couple of provinces vastly increased their medical school population or dropped residency posts. Also, in 4/5 years many recent Irish graduates will sit on Residency selection panels which can't be a bad thing. Having an EU/EEA passport kicking around as a back-up plan to stay in Europe for post-graduate training certainly mitigates the level of risk as well.

Currently, Irish grads are having great successes returning to Canada for residencies, and past limiting factors like Return of Service are becoming much less restrictive. You are also in the best position if you're trying to get back to Ontario as Quebec, BC, and Alberta are pretty closed to IMGs for the present (but they've all stated that will change or are in the proccess of changing). The worldwide doctor shortage, and aging population demanding more medical service, are problems that are going to get much worse before they get better, and will likely drive up the number of training positions as provinces look to fill the gaps.

So all-in-all my thoughts are pretty positive.

If you have any specific questions PM me and I'll try to get you the answers.

Hey so it says here:
"
All applicants to intern posts must have a documented right
to work in Ireland. In line with current Department of
Enterprise and Employment Work Permit requirements,
applicants who require a permit to work in Ireland will only
be considered in the event that all eligible applicants who
do not require a permit to work in Ireland have been
assigned to intern posts."
"The centile rank
of each applicant in their final class will form the primary
ranking criterion."
"
Applicants who require a permit to work in Ireland will be
ranked after those who do not require a permit to work in
Ireland."

it seems based on this that if you dont have an EU passport/pr it is absolutely impossible to do an internship in ireland. Would a student get it if he married an EU citizen? Any other ways? thanks.

1) it isn't impossible, people who require work permits got spots last year (and every year prior to that, but that was under a different system) as there were more spots than EU applicants; it is, however, less likely and more competitive.

2) if you marry an EU citizen you can apply to be a PR and therefore would not require a work permit.

3)other than immigrating I don't know of any other ways

Yep. "Thank you for providing us with 73% of our medical education funding. Now get the hell out."

Caused big uproar in Trinity a few years ago when they started changing the system. 16 of the non-EU students in my class did not get intern training posts. Still bitter about that one. Nearly went to lawyers. I think this is really not a smart move. With more schools opening in the US, fewer North Americans are going to go over and hence less money to operate the schools. I don't know about the contractual agreements with Malaysia, but why anyone would willingly go to feel used is beyond me.

Having said that, I'm lucky enough to have gotten out before this got bad and I got my intern post and made a crap load of money before moving back to the US. So in that way, those of us who stayed said "I'm getting all the money from you I can, collect all my tax rebates and leaving." I'd say I earned in overtime, worker's comp, grants, at least 50% of my college tuition back :). But then after I left they started changing the overtime wage schemes.

Hello everyone:)
I am going to work as an intern from July in Ireland. And I was wondering what is it like?? Is it hard? Will I have someone to show me everything? Or I will be left on my own while working? I come from Poland, so many things could be different I suppose;) Also, there will be some overtime. How many hours is it? How is it paid ?
If someone could help me with this questions, I would be very grateful:)
Have a nice day:D

Hi friends.

How is it like to be SHO in Ireland ?

:luck:

Hello, I am a gastroenterology resident from Lithuania and I wanted to ask is there a chance to come for any fellowship programmes in Ireland? under what conditions it can be done? do I have to contact the hospitals directly?

Hi,

I now this post is quite old... But I was just wondering if things have changed in Ireland during the last two year just like in the UK? Are internship positions still given directly via the schools? Is that the same for the SHO positions? Or is there any central organisation?

I am graduating from medschool (germany, EU citizen) in may 2012 and I was wondering what options I would have to work in the Ireland??? I will have done my 1 year internship (4 months surgery, 4 months internal medicine and 4 months orthopedics) by the time of my graduation. I have never done any medical training in Ireland, so I dont know the system and daily work routine at all. So I was wondering for what I should apply? Is it difficult to get a SHO position? And isn´t it a bit too "dangerous" to work there as a bloody beginner? In Germany, we usually dont have any resposiblity during our internship year and we dont get paid.

Thanks for your help!!!

Hi there,
I have some questions about Irish medical training and I would be very grateful for any help. I will be graduating next year in Poland and I was wondering if it is difficult to get an intern placement in an Irish hospital? Does Ireland accept foreigners for the intern year or all of the places are filled with Irish medical schools graduates? I would be also very happy, if someone could write some practical information about application procedure for the intern year? I have read some clues on the medical council web site, but it's always better to hear it from a student :)
My second question concerns specialist training in Ireland. I'm planing to start pediatric surgery or general surgery. Is it difficult to start a specialist training? How shall I applicate for a post? Is there some sort of an exam or you're accepted after an interview?
Thanks a lot for any information on these matters.
Matthew

I am currently studying at SJTU, Shanghai which is one of the best institutions in China, the only problem being that my course was done in Chinese, English isn't a problem for me, should I first do an international exam such as PLAB or USMLE to improve my chance of getting an internship in Ireland or should I try applying with my degree itself?

I think next to impossible to do internship in ireland . Do it in your own country and then do the pres exam. May be if u from poland u do not need pres as u from eu.

good evening

Im a intern in Portugal and I wonder if after the conclusion can I apply for a place in residence in Ireland.

Hello,
I'm currently around a year away from graduating from Egypt. I want to start my training in Ireland right after receiving the MB BCh (without internship year in my school).
How do i make my MB BCh eligible/accredited in Ireland? and what are the requirements needed from international graduates (NON-EU) for registering and applying for internship then residency (I'm not sure how exactly it goes after internship). AND is there ANYTHING i can start working on NOW to make it easier, any pre-graduate examinations or registrations?
Thank you

Hi,

My medical education is from Pakistan, I finish my education in 2008 but couldn't finish my internship there because of personal reasons. Now I want to apply for internship program. I have written Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination (MCCEE) and The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE Part I) .So can I still apply for internship this year.

Hi! I am from pakistan. I want to get residency in Ireland preferably in surgery. What are my chances? And what is the procedure/ I am new to this forum and would really appreciate help.:)

A lot of people want to come to Ireland, Canada etc for training. The truth is there are no spots at any of these places. Most of these countries are now filling their training spots with people from their own country. Irish medical school grads with non-EU passports are even being rejected from internship, there is no way someone who didn't do med school in Ireland and doesn't have a EU passport will get a spot anywhere.

Hi, I know that you are well passed this stage by now. Could you please provide me with some info about my chances of getting accepted for Irish intership? I'm non-EU graduating from an EU university. I know that the spots are very limited and they favour Irish over others. Do I have any chance of getting accepted? Should I bother applying?
