Is it worthwhile to get a PDA or one of those alphabet phones so that you can have E-Pocrates? Or can you get by as well by using Pharmacopeia?

This decision may influence which phone I buy and/or whether or not I need a PDA.

No matter how many times I dropped my pharmacopoeia, it never broke. Ditto for the note cards I used to keep track of my patients.

Can't say the same thing about the two PDAs I went through before I realized that the ability to play games during morning report wasn't worth $400.

I believe Epocrates has the advantage of listing specific doses for specific indications. This is very useful for a drug that has several uses, and different recommended doses for each dose.

The Pharmacopeia, on the other hand, gives only a range of doses, which can be quite broad, so you might be left wondering exactly what dose to prescribe.

epocrates also has lists of adverse reactions, mech of action, and cost info. i carry both, because my pda sucks and the battery dies in 2 hours if i leave it on.

well said.

I have epocrates on my Treo. I love it. It has dosages for different indications, dose adjutments for renal patients and mechanisms of action & half-lives. I dropped it many times and to my surprise it still works.

I was checking out those alphabet phones like Blackberry and Palm, and although they don't cost that much, their plans are very expensive. At AT&T the cheapest talk and data plan is something like $80.

Epocrates will not run on Blackberry's. It will only work on PDAs that use either mobile Windows or PAlm OS. No word yet on when Epocrates will be ready to run on Blackberry devices. I love using Epocrates, but find some of the Pediatric info a little too sketchy, and at times completely lacking. Otherwise it's good and easy to use. I forked over the extra money for the Essentials which also has Labs, Dx and Sx tools.

Personally, I use PEPID:

Yup, I made sure that Epocrates was compatible before I switched from a Treo to my current Blackberry.
