Hi guys,

I'm an MS-IV from a US school who didn't match into gas. I plan to reapply next year. My question is, is it better to do my intern year next yr and reapply as an intern OR should I take a yr off and reapply?? If I reapply as an intern, can I still apply for categorical spots?? Will programs let you repeat intern yr if you match categorical the second time around? I am assuming that I would apply for an advanced spot starting as a CA-1 in 2010 and then if I matched I would take a yr off. Are programs ok with this or will they reject you outright? Is it better to just take a year off?? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Feel free to PM me. Thanks!

I was told the best way to go was to do as competitive a prelim year as possible and then reapply for categorical spots.

If you take a year off, the thought is that you need to do something productive and while research helps, I don't think anything would match doing well and notching solid LORs/references from a strong prelim program.

i think it is better to reapply as an intern. Vcu holds two spots for incoming ca ones (and I was very impressed with this program -- level one trauma center, great moonlighting, awesome faculty, PD seemed like a great guy and I thought they had a good clinical experience but enough time in didatics and to read. i thought richmond was charming and the surrounding area was beautiful but others disagreed).

have you called cleveland clinic? i know they have a class of 10 that starts in january...i don't know if those spots are already full or not....anyone else know?

Everything that Amyl said about VCU is true. We have a great program.
Vcu does offer positions outside of the match. I came to VCU after training in another specialty.

I think that anyone who did not match should start an internship in July. They should work hard and secure strong letters. I don't think that taking a year off to do research would be helpful. During the internship year you can take step III and obtain a full medical license @ the end of the internship year.

All the best,

Cambie

Any thoughts on using previous LORs? I ask because there is likely no time to retake an anesthesia rotation in Prelim year (at least not prior to submitting apps on Sep 1).

Is it possible to mix MS-4 LORs and 1 (or 2) LORs from Prelim Year? How do programs view this?

Also is there a list of Anesth programs which offer out-of-match spots?

Thanks

MYG

I agree with the advice posted. You should definitely try applying for an out-of-match PGY-2 positions starting in '09 (best possible as they would begin right after your prelim year) as well as 2010 categorical and advanced positions through the next match cycle. I was able to secure a CA-1 position for July 2008 after completing a surgery prelim year in 2007. My mistake (as I was told numerous times on the interview trail) was the time off between the end of my prelim year and the beginning of the CA-1 year, so I would heed Mariah246's advice and ensure that you are in some sort of residency setting before you begin you CA-1 year. Good Luck!!👍

What would you do for that year after you finish your intern year and before you start CA-1? Research fellowship?

You could complete a prelim PGY-2 year if your current program allowed it. I previously posted about a buddy of mine who was in the middle of his PGY-2 prelim surg year 😱 but left halfway through it (with some difficulty) to start a Jan '08 out-of-match CA-1 position. Better yet, if you have completed your step 3 and have a current temporary state license, you could moonlight in an ER and start paying back some of those student loans😎. I don't have any experience with research fellowships, but if you are still trying to get a CA-1 position, they should definitely help.
