not sure, id be interested in some more responses too. Right now ive got listed 15 transitional year programs and 6 prelim-IM. Too many? Too few? Right on?
I would like to try and do my PGY-1 year in the same city that I will be doing my ophthalmology residency. How do you plan for this? Apply to one or two programs in every city you applied for ophtho, then interview at those where you interview for ophtho? Thanks for the help!

Apply to every program in cities you expect and\or really hope to get interviews. Then set up the interview for the PGY1 spot after match day for us, that way if you don't match there you can cancel it. If you can't do that at least put it later than your ophtho interview so if you end up hating the ophtho program you don't have to do the PGY1 one. Lastly one option is to try and do the interviews the same day or the next day, some PGY1 will do this for you but it does make things more difficult.
Thanks for the advice. On a side note, in regards to LOR for transitional and prelim, I was planning to just submit my 2 ophtho, 1 gsurg, 1 ED. However, I was recently informed that I may need a medicine Program Chair/director letter for some prelim/transitional programs. Anyone have any insight on this matter?

I heard the same thing when I applied and it was NEVER an issue...I think I got every prelim/ty interview except 1...so dont sweat it too much...and if it IS a program that really does require the Chair/PD letter for a year of medicine, maybe it's a bit more hardcore than some of the other more "lax/cush" internships...so that should be a thought in your mind as well
is it true that some programs want 3 letters, and ONLY 3 letters? i heard that if they request for 3, it may be disadvantageous to send 4.

Some programs specifically say "no information outside of the CAS/SF Match information will be considered." They usually have it somewhere on their website. I dont know whether they will look poorly on you for the 4th LOR or just throw it away...so if they request 3...then I wouldnt push the issue...
