expect to be more proactive in patient management for this rotation. Contrary to clerkships like OB and Surgery where you just stand there and watch, in medicine you will be asked to flex your intellectual muscles. Get used to the SOAP format presentation. Get used to utilizing the signout to your advantage (signout is a census of patients on your team with a list of important info on each of them). Check lists of what you need to do for each patient you're following/managing is very helpful too.
For example, to preround I will do the following,
1. Check in with the nurse and/or nightfloat for any overnight events
2. Check the orders to see what new meds/labs/films have been ordered
3. F/U with new labs and daily vitals
4. Talk with the pt if possible and ask if there are any new issues/problems
5. Quick 5 minute pertinent exam
6. Figure out on your own what should be done today in order to complete your diagnosis, continue with treatment, and most importantly what needs to be done to eventually discharge your patient.
Start your note if there is enough time before morning rounds.
Peds will work similarly as well. Goodluck
