I know that sports med is a path that FM docs can take. Is it possible or common for internists to get into these fellowships?

It is possible.
I don't personally know any internist who was done it given the lack of both peds and Ortho in IM residencies.
Definitely possible. I have worked with a few sports med docs that were IM trained.
That being said, I would imagine it to be more of an uphill battle given how busy IM residency is and relative lack of ortho/peds as mentioned above
However, the ones I worked with were just as good as those FM trained so go for it if interested
