Internal/Surgical

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Internal medicine is the opposite of surgery...internists treat adults with medicine. See www.doctorsforadults.com

To become a cardiac surgeon, graduate from medical school then complete a general surgery residency (5-7 years) and then complete a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery (2-4 years).

I was wondering what the difference is between internal medicine and surgury?

Internal medicine, as its name implies, only deals with the *interior* of the patient. This branch of medicine is only concerned with what goes on the inside a person, and virtually ignores anything on the outside of the body. That is why you never see an internal med physician dealing with a patient's arm or hair, as those structures are found on the outside the patient's body and thus outside the realm of internal medicine. Likewise, by looking at the name you'll realize that internal medicine is also comprised of the word *medicine*. This is becacause internal med physicians are trained to only prescribe *medicine* for what goes on *inside* a person's body. If something goes wrong on the outside that can't be fixed by medicine, then internal med docs must refer their patients to a surgeon.

Surgeons originated from medieval barbers, and thus they do deal with hair, unlike internal med docs. In fact, most patients have their body shaved before most operations, because surgeons like to retain their heritage of removing hair like the barbers who came before them. Also unlike internal med physicians, surgeons do deal with both the outside and inside of a person's body because they actually have to cut from the outside to operate on the inside.

Besides this, there is not too much else that separates surgery from internal medicine.

your posts are getting more and more amusing. Keep your tongue firmly in cheek! 😉
Agreed.

AS, you're intelligent, insightful and - most important - hilarious. You're also an ass, but you know that (and seem to revel in it, for some pathological reason. Not sure I know the DSM IV on that one...)

It's fun having you around.

I believe this is a direct violation of the TOS. Will the moderators please take appropriate action so we can maintain a friendly and open environment on the surgical forum so that we can express our thoughts without fear of personal attacks. Thank you in advance.

*snicker...snort*

Interesting how the human mind works. I thought I was speaking out in support of AS. There is such a groundswell of opposition and hostility toward him. I thought I'd help him out by commending his clever humor.

AS, you were unaware of this negative perception you've been fostering? Hmm...who knew?

My apologies. I didn't anticipate any offense would be taken, and none was intended.

I was just playing along womansurg. I think you have become a bit too serious since you've hit the attending level, even though you're not even an academic surgeon.

since you are attending Flinders, and not Univ Washington like you told everybody, do you think you'll make a good academic surgeon?

isn't honesty and integrity an asset in academia?

There has always been a vast conspiracy against me by these oppressive moderators...and this is simply another chapter in their underhanded book.

Not mentioning any names 😉 but a certain very arrogant person has repeatedly claimed to be a student at u WA, and constantly bashed people as being inferior , that went to foreign medical schools.

all of a sudden, one of the mods traces his IP address and posts " how are you finding Flinders"....publically stating that this person is posting from Flinders, and not Seattle. Hmmm

nothing wrong with flinders, but when you attack people that are going the same route as you, and lie and act superior, you sure look bad when the truth comes out!

I just wanted to take the opportunity to point out that it is against SDN Moderator/Administrator policy to "out" members publically (whether it be IP address, email, etc.).

Unfortunately, the user mentioned above did have his location noted in a public forum by one of our newer Moderators.

We have discussed this at length in the Moderator Forums and I feel confident that we are all in agreement to abide by the policy of keeping personal information about users private. I wish to apologize for this error and assure users that we will religiously guard private information entrusted to us, unless this information is subpoenaed or otherwise legally necessary to disclose.
