Hey guys, what's up?

I want everyone's opinion on this matter: I am currently an undergraduate student with the intent on going into dentistry. I've been looking at studying abroad, at the University of West Indies in the Carribbean. I have a few questions that I would be forever greatful if anyone can answer:

1) How hard is the National Boards Part I if you study abroad?

2) Does anyone know success stories of foreign trained dentists now residing in the USA?

3) Do most foreign dental schools (not in the US) have adequate training to pass the National Boards Part 1?

4) How competitive are the Qualifying Programs for Foreign Trained Dentist (2 year advanced program)?

5) Is it worth going abroad to study dentistry? (no DAT required, no interview, no organic chemistry required)

Thanks alot,
Pce.

Hi
it all depends on which country you go for the dental studies, compared to the training I received from my country, US dental schools charge way way way over for the tuition and the training is weak in general, in my opinion. The National Dental board exams are comparably a lot easier than any exam I had in the past, the clinical requirements in US dental schools are also not as demanding as that of my school...( from the numbers I read in certain schools)
But of course, there are also many schools in the world where you can get your degree easily without striving too much. But then, Dentistry isn't just a degree you show off, it is something that is gonna be useful in your career, it is better to cry first and smile later as you will find out that a weak training puts you really in inferiority in your career. If you are planning on practicing in the US, I think it is better to go to a US school, because foreign trained dentists just have to put up with all the craps from the US dental boards...no matter how much more compotent they are!!!

and if you pick a school like mine in a foreign country, you have to put up with 4 hours average of sleep, 24 hours working in the hospital, working as a dentist AND a lab technician and 24 hours on call every 2 weeks, and many many " you have to repeat this " ...not to mention that it is much harder to get admission into my school than into any American dental school!!

foreign schools are not the easy way, if you'd ever think that way...

if you have the money to burn, go to a US dental school

this is my humble opinion

Organic,

Thanks for the info! Where did you get your DDS degree? Can you tell me about your experiences more (about getting into an advanced standing program)?

Thanks,

bus
