Hi non-trads, this is a question for some of the more experienced among you--maybe at the resident level. I'm a rising 4th year and have 3 little kids. Trying to figure out a way to do an international elective next year in a warm Spanish speaking country, and bring them along. Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm thinking either this is a great idea or a terrible idea. Spouse is on board.

Does 'on board', mean spouse would be coming along?

If so, do it! You will have to find housing, and get passports for the kids but it would be a great adventure for them.

But you are going to be busy and you won't have a local daycare to take them to so you need a second adult. Though this could be a friend or sibling......

Yeah spouse would come. Kids are old enough to attend elementary school there if that were possible.

We'll see... it's a little complicated but maybe it can be done.

i know it's not the same, but i actually went to college through a single parent program (former teen parent). my best friend was a spanish major and studied abroad for a year in mexico - she took her son with her! they had a blast! she said it was such an incredible year and her son became fluent in spanish. unfortunately he lost a lot of it from coming back to the US, but it was so cool to skype with her and hear him speak so perfectly. 🙂 they have the very best memories from that year.

the one college experience i feel i missed out on was studying abroad. it is definitely a dream of mine and the only thing i truly missed out from my situation of having my daughter young. i, too, am very interested in international electives if the school i am accepted to (if i am accepted!) has options for them. my husband and daughter are on board, as well! i think it is definitely possible. it is probably going to be a pain to get all the paperwork, passports, and other details in order, but it doesn't matter because i think it will DEFINITELY be worth it! especially if your kids are young, they will have a blast.

good luck:luck:

Wow! If you find a good program, let me know. Ive got kids 12 9 and 6, all schooled in Spanish and English. We came very close to doing this very thing this year before school starts, but got hit with a financial hurdle that made it too hard. There may be more certainty down the road and my wife and I would love to do this with our family.

(btw, Dominican Republic looked pretty good as an option. Acccessible, genuine need, and chance for vacation time too.)
