I am currently a first year resident in the United States. My program allows me to do electives outside of my hospital and I was interested in doing an elective abroad. Do hospitals in foreign countries generally accept visiting interns from the US?

Hi, it's generally quite difficult for residents to do electives abroad because the systems are quite different. Say normally you do 1 month rotations in your specialty (like for IM, you'll change every month) whereas say in Europe, rotations last 3 months or longer than 1 month. Also, hospitals may generally take their interns/residents from their own teaching hospitals and availability of spots may not be open. But I'd contact hospitals you are interested in and ask them if something can be arranged. It will probably take a lot of work to push it, but perseverence can pay off and open the door to others interested in something similar to what you're doing.
