I did a search and found some, but just thought i'd get some recent info.

Any cool international electives for EM residents? I guess even if they were cool as medical student electives...I'm sure some of those will have something set up for a resident too?

I'm pretty open to anywhere country wise,
it seems like australia would be an easy place to set one up, just not sure i want to do it there...

I tried to look for an infectious disease one with CDC, but couldnt find any specific information.

You mentioned ID with the CDC. They only allow people doing their fellowship in emerging infectious diseases to do those kind of rotations.

i'm just a med student, but some residents at my institution went to Guatemala for a month and had a great experience. PM me if you want more info

you should check with your institution to see if they have any connections.
we also have an attending from Guyana, so there are always opportunities there for us. i'm going to Peru for the tropical medicine course in April. it's not really EM, but should help with my Spanish as well as recognition of tropical diseases/parasites.

there are lists of rotations available out on the web as well (some through EMRA international section i think)

mostly i'll be in Lima, but i'll have weekends free and potentially time at the end to explore more of Peru, depending on when i have to come back to reality and find a place to live. would love to hear your insight, feel free to PM me with recommendations...thanks!!

Hey are you talking about the Gorgas Course for medical students that is organized between the UAB and Cayetano Heredia University in lima?. Well im a medical student from Cayetano Heredia currently helping with the regular Gorgas Course for physicians. Let me tell you is an excellent course. You are going to see a lot of interesting cases. For example in the 2 weeks since the beggining of the course we have seen(just to mention a bunch): Fasciolasis, sporotrichosis, strongyloidiasis,hydatidosis, miasis,leishmaniasis,HTLV-1 infections and co-infections, brucellosis,histoplasmosis,etc,etc.
The Cayetano Heredia Hospital recieves a lot of trauma patients from Lima North; gunshots wounds,knive wounds,car accidents,etc. You can check the ED anytime you like, and if you are really interested you could help there if you have the time.

We just set up an all-expense paid elective to St. Martin. Seriously, they'll fly us there, give you an apartment and a car. You work at the ED on a 14-16 shift schedule. Pretty sweet.

It's brand new, though (just found out in January). So nobody's gone yet.

pretty much any place that I can see some medicine stuff I won't see much of here in the states... All those parasitic diseases and stuff must be prevalent somewhere right? haha. Only prob is I dont want to get any of them worms in me!

Um, trauma not so big on, I get that here. Preventive medicine? we are in EM haha, joking.

I guess I'm not that strong on burn victims and infectious disease, from our standpoint its not that important to recognize the rare infectious stuff, but jsut from being a doctor standpoint i want to see rare things.

I saw yale has a bunch of international programs "for their resident's" haha. I've still got a year and a half, but i'm sure it will come up fast, then I'll just do some random nonsense rotation at my own place.

that sounds interesting, plus I'm from UAB and I know they had a lot of connections with Peru, one of my old attendings is from there too and he is one of the smartest ID docs (or docs in general) i know...

French West Indies (Caribbean). Check out Belize. There are a number of well organized international rotations there. I was going to go on one but had to stick around NYC for my six weeks of elective instead. Let me know if you want more info.

check out trauma.org. I found an international elective for med students that I went on to Jo'berg S. Africa. Spent the whole month in the ED and with the paramedics in the field (got to see some pretty crazy areas that a white guy from the US would never get to see normally). Not sure what they have for residents, but I did meet a Canadian EM resident working there so I know it is possible. Plus, they have a trauma bank at Jo'berg gen and do a fair amount of research if that interests you. Check it out.

I did an elective here as a 4th year medical student and it was a great experience. Definitely see things you would never see in the US. I did the infectious disease course but you still you have days where you do ER, derm, etc.

I am leaving in 1 month to complete a second International EM Rotation in Panama. CHMAAM Hospital in Panama City has an EM residency program, and they are more than happy to take students. I completed an elective there between MSI & MSII and it was one of the best educational experiences I've had... Lots of pathology you're not likely to see, excellent faculty with great clinical and didactic teaching. If you are interested, let me know and I'll hook you up.

I'm not sure about Q. #1, although I have spoken to several programs I've interviewed with and they are all receptive about me returning during residency. I know EM programs with international electives make them work somehow.

I already was fluent in Spanish before going (It's my first language; I'm originally from Panama). Most of the faculty and residents spoke English fluently.
