hello,

I'm currently a US pre-med students. I was curious to see if it is possible to complete your residency at another country (Shanghai, China to be exact).

thanks!

You can, but it won't count toward US licensure or specialty boards. Most countries have very specific training requirements to practice in them. In all states you have to have one year of US residency (internship year), in a bunch you now have to have two years and in one, I think, perhaps two, you need three years. Organized medicine is lobbying hard to make specialty board certification (or 3 years residency) mandatory everywhere. The one exception is RCPSC residencies in Canada. The US recognizes Canadian training, but the converse is not true. Canadians do not recognize US residency, although with their national health care system in financial shambles as more Canadians emigrate to the US they are softening on this position.

This applies even to the less advanced nations. There are several eastern European and Central Asian nations (I have no knowledge of China specifically, but the former Soviet Republics immediately west of China, for example) that do not accept US residency training even though they are far behind where we are, technologically.

Check the specialty board of your choice(s) and see what they'll accept.
