I am a US med student. Has anyone done an international 4th year rotation in Ireland/UK and if so where was it? I am interested in this for my 4th year. Do any Ireland/UK med students here know of US med students that have rotated through their hospitals?

Yes, we get many overseas medical students doing a short rotation in the UK, from countries all over the world. Likewise most of the UK students go overseas for our elective in the 4th/5th year.

We call this an "overseas elective" in the UK. Most medical schools have an administrator who deals with elective attachments, so try and contact them in the areas you are interested in. Many do not require fees and some offer free/ cheap (though basic) accommodation.

I guess it is the same for Ireland but I suspect they will charge $$$ as they seem far more inclined to make money from US students over there!!

Nice- I might consider this! Who else can say they did a genuine pub cralw during their 4th year?

Just kidding. Sounds like an excellent way to gain more perspective on medicine.

I'm a 4th year US student and will be doing a GKT elective next month. BUT I can't find housing at all, and I don't know what to do. I've tried all the London school dorms and check gumtree.com and craigslist every day. Do you guys have any suggestions??

Have you contacted the GKT Accommodation office to see if they can help?

I found this on their website:

Fees, Expenses and Accommodation

Elective students will be expected to pay their own accommodation costs and living and travel expenses whilst they are at the School of Medicine at Guy's, King's College & St Thomas' Hospitals, as they are regarded as full-time students. It is not possible to offer any financial assistance towards the expenses of elective students. Students must make their own arrangements for travel and living accommodation in this country. If your application is accepted we will send you details of the Accommodation Offices of King's College London and the University of London plus a booklet with details of hostels within London who can accommodate short-term students. Please note that it is only possible to accommodate elective students in King's College London hostels during the months of July and August. At other times of the year the hostels are fully occupied by our own students. Enquiries regarding accommodation must be made direct to the Accommodation Office and not to the Electives Service or the Registry.

The Youth Hostel Association have hostels in Euston and Hampstead, with some single rooms, but not sure if you can have these for several weeks but may be worth checking out.

I am not London-based so am unable to offer much advice, sorry. In the summer it is easy to find uni accommodation but at this time of year it is going to be difficult, and expensive.

Does anybody know of a website with a list of med schools with good rotation potential in the UK, particularly London?
Thanks

So did you have any success lining something like this up?

I'd be interested in such a thing myself.

We've had US students at the Trinity hospitals. A few of them seem to be from georgetown, so there might be some sort of relationship set up there. But anyway, email or phone the international student coordinator (erika keane, although she's part time and quite busy so it might take awhile to hear back)
