Anyone heard of this program or have experience with it? I received this fancy letter stating that I've been nominated, but I'm usually skeptical of the legitimacy of things like this. I googled it, and it seems like several universities refer to it on their official sites while a couple others say it could be a scam. Comments anyone?

I think I got one of those a year or two ago. I did not participate though, I didn't want to cough up the money for it. I have an education to pay for.

I think that's your answer right there, pardner.

This is not a scam. I'm saying this out of experience. I got the invitation to the International Scholar Laureate Program because I participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum. Comparing the two invitations, the director is the same person. Therefore, it is logical to conclude that this is not "fake."

I believe that one can definitely learn a lot from what the program offers - not just from the discussions and workshops but also because it is an experience of a lifetime. To be able to travel and learn with peers who share the same interests as you.... seems fun.

It IS very pricey, however. I cannot afford the trip, but if I find a scholarship for it, I will go. And if you're rich and the price isn't an issue... go for it b/c I'd love to be in your shoes. Hope this helps =]

Scholarships never require the recipient to pay large sums of money.

This may sound obvious, but there are quite a few scams out there. They appear legit, but they want you to pay up; that's the red flag.

This is the first that I've heard of this, but I can't follow your logic. The fact that you had previously paid this same person in order to participate in a "Forum" doesn't make this latest scam legit.

If you want to learn with your peers, invite them to join you at the library.

I also received this one out of the blue a few years ago... does sound like a scam to me.

If you are serious about going abroad talk to your advisor or counselor about what your school can offer -- these will probably be cheaper and more importantly, more "legit".

I also want to ask: so what is this "national dean's list" thing???

Its not fake, in fact we were just talking about it last night because I got that letter too. It is very pricey though. It's $5000 for a summer trip to any country of your choice. They have options like China, Indian, England, Italy, etc... You will take classes in that country over the summer ( I am guessing cultural classes//). $5000 includes travel, room, food, and everything. If you go shopping then you have to pay for your own.

it's not a scam, i worked as a counselor ("faculty advisor") for the nylf last summer. i think if you read the letter you'll find the program is run by a company called Envision.

yes, they are pricey trips, but from what i can gather, the international ones are quite exciting.
