Hi guys
I'm an international student and graduated in Mechanical Engineering with a 3.65 oGPA (Science GPA is a bit higher). I am in my gap year and just took my DAT last month. I have a AA 25, TS 26, have about 500 volunteering hours, 200 shadowing hours, did some research in my sophomore year but it wasn’t dental-related.

I am currently looking at schools that I'll possibly apply to but how many schools should I apply to in order to be safe? I have seen people with similar stats as mine applying to 10-15 schools but since I'm an international student I've been told that I'm at a disadvantage and need to apply to more schools.
Can someone help me with a number/range so that I can make my list of schools in the next month or so.
Thank you in advance!!

Ten max. I would even say less like 5.
I wouldn’t say your at a disadvantage being international. I think schools like international students because they can charge more tuition.

When you say you are an international student, do you mean you were a student on a F-1 visa and are now in your gap year before you have to return to the home country, or is your undergrad from a different country? If it's the former, you would need a permanent resident status for a lot of schools, as some do not take on F-1 students. Reach out to all the schools you wish to apply to and inquire.

Purely stats-wise, you are solid 🙂

Good luck!

I went to high school in Texas and completed my undergrad there. I am currently in the process on immigration and will have my green card in 1-2 years. But the way the application classifies me is an International student .

I really appreciate you giving me feedback.

I was an international student who applied last cycle. I applied to 16. I got 13 interview invites, went to 10, and got into 7 (wait-listed at 3). You have great stats so believe in yourself!

Some international-friendly schools:
- NYU
- UDM
- USC
- Nova
- Pitt
- VCU
- Michigan
- With your stats, shoot the ivys (Harvard, Penn, Columbia - rumors say Columbia is not very international friendly right now)
- Case
- AT Still
- Boston U
- West VA
- Maryland
- Temple
- UoP
- Loma Linda
- Midwestern - IL
- Roseman
- Stony Brook
- Louisville

Of course, I didn't apply to all of these. Some of them are more international-friendly than others. Do your research early and know what you want (specializing, clinical skills, etc.)

Let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to DM me!

No offense to the person who replied and said less than 5 schools... I WOULD NOT recommend applying to that few as an international student. There are schools I thought I'd for sure get into but didn't even get an interview... As an international student, I couldn't take the risk of applying again the year after due to the possible complications with my Visa status. I don't know if you're in the same shoes with that since you have a green card on the way. But if you want to be 100% sure to get in this cycle, I wouldn't want to apply to just 5 schools...
