Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there are any international students in a US dental school and have applied/are applying to GPR/AEGD programs? It seems that many of the programs accept students w/ foreign visas, however, w/ limited spots in each program I wasn't sure as to any disadvantages of being a non-US citizen. Any information regarding this would be appreciated!

Thanks,
D

I think there is no chance for foreign graduate in GPR simply because they only accept graduate of accredeted schools but u may have a chance in some AEGD programs.🙂

brush, do u know if they still give part 1 and part 2 exams to foreign students?

I am going to be graduating from Tufts next year, however I am not a US citizen. Some GPR programs I've looked into say that foreigners may apply, as long as you have a US dental degree. Any ideas?

Hello,
The limitation in Hospital based GPR's are do to the federal funding that states they will only fund graduates of ADA accrediated schools. Another problem is the hospital policy on VISAs. Each VISA places requirements on the "employer". Some state the "employer" must pay certain fees or insure that the resident returns to their home country. Many hospitals won't take or have the extra time to do this.

Hi, regarding NBDE u need to check with each place u r applying to. Besides if u r graduate of accredited school so there is no problem since u already did part I & part II. Good luck

Absolutely, apply. I agree.
You may be at a slight disadvantage, as mentioned earlier due to GME funding, but that does not rule anything out.
You will have an accredited degree from a respected school. That is a good start.
I actually know a couple of guys who got into GPR's just this month. Neither had an accredited degree nor were they citizens/permanent residents.
However, I would say that these guys flew under the radar. But your situation is different.
You can start searching programs & requirements here:

http://ada.org/prof/ed/programs/search_advanced_us.asp

By the way I am in the same boat, however, I am a US citizen. I'm applying to a couple of programs in Boston too.
Where are you thinking of applying ?

is it required for international dentist to go in for AEGD/GPR if u graduated from a non accredited dental school??:scared:
specifically if u r planning to get enrolled at some post doctoral prog??
Any information regarding that will be highly appreciated🙂

In addition to your idea,
As I know, in some states, Non ADA-accredited graduates can get chances to take clinical exams for license after GPR or AEGD.

I know a few foreign-trained dentists that have gotten their postgrad education in the US in recent years, without having been through AEGD or GPR first. One pedodontist, one endodontist, two periodontists, two orthodontists and a prosthodontist.

One of my teachers in dental school finished an OMS recidency in Alabama, but that was in '75. I guess getting into OMS for a FTD is near impossible nowadays.

bt hw come can we FTD's can aplly..bcoz the essential requirement is presentation of Boards score???😕

Hello, everybody, could anyone please explain for me what do these items stand for? 1.GPR 2.AEGD 3.OMS 4.FTD
BTW, is there any chance for me to do post-graduate residency if I am non USA citizen/without US green card, and did not graduate form an ADA accredit dental school?
If yes, can I get the license after I complete the residency program?
Any comment will be highly appreciated! Thank you very much!

GRP = General Practice Recidency
AEGD = Advanced Education General Dentistry
OMS = Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
FTD = Foreign Trained Dentist

Yes

It's possible, but not easy. Do a search on SDN and read this document: http://www.ada.org/prof/prac/licensure/us_a.pdf

Any chance, yes (but not good). That chance however depends on what kind of specialty program you are applying to.
Here is an estimate for what residencies are the easiest to get into, ending with the most competitive:

1. Public Health - Less competitive
2. OMF Radiology
3. OMF Pathology
4. Prosthodontics
5. Periodontics
6. Pedodontics
7. Orthodontics
8. OMF Surgery
9. Endodontics - Highly competitive

These are the only specialties recognized by the ADA, and in turn, the only ones in which you MAY be eligible for state licensure according to state dental boards.
It is still very difficult to obtain a dental license in any of these specialties in most states, even upon graduation from residency programs. I have seen people look for jobs for months and years, with no one wanting to hire them.

In summary, choose your battles. If you have no experience post-graduation, specially if it is not in the US, and you are not a legal resident in the US, do not think of applying to Endo yet.

thank you very much for your help, i am really very thankful. but i was wondering what chances do i have if i try for pedodontics or maybe radiology for a change? i did my BDS from Nepal including a year of internship and i have a year's experience of practice in a hospital setup back home.
I have got pretty good score in TOEFL and am taking the NBDE1 this october.
do you think i stand any chance if i apply on these subjects?
loking forward to your suggestions again,

There is really no telling. I would hate to give you false hopes, or needlessly put you down. Your experience (which sounds ok) may not be all that relevant to the programs you will be applying to. What is, however, is your part I (and II) scores.
Having said that, Radio should be much easier to get in than Pedo. Pedo is what's hot nowadays ...

Just do your Part I and apply ... what the heck ! Just have a good back up plan. You must acknowledge that it may not happen right away, and make peace with that fact.

Best of Luck !
