This question is more geared towards people in the OD program in the US but originally from Canada but anyone with insight plz reply......

Basically which schools in the States accept more Canadian students and what kinds of GPA and OAT scores are they looking for. Which school are "easier" to get into for internaltional students? I have heard that all the "low" GPA students that schools that come from the people that live there while the higher ones come from outside the state since they pay more tuition and dont want these students to drop out. Thats the bussiness aspect of it but I wanted to hear what you guys think....Thanks in advance?

pretty much all of the US schools, with exception to hte one in oklahoma, are open to international and particularily Canadian students. I've had correspondence with many of them, especially the northeastern ones, and they were all welcoming of Canadian applicants, some even regularly send reps to Canadian universities. Also, to my knowledge none of the these schools discriminate on the basis of citizenship for admissions. You have an equal opportunity as a US resident/citizen.

Basically they all accept Canadians, but large schools in the north tend to have more Canadian students, places like NECO, ICO, PCO, Pacific will have the most, some are even about 20% Canadian.

In my class at SCO there are four (off the top of my head) from Canada and one more that used to live there (out of 124). In fact, the professor that interviewed me was from Canada!
SCO tends not to accept OAT scores below 300 (and they really want it to be above 300). I'm not sure about the GPA but I know they place a lot of importance on the OAT score.

Thanks for your comments guys..........i was wondering if there is any guidelines to follow when choosing the right school for you. Like i stated before i am from Canada and obviously tuition is a big concern but what are my chances for geting into a school and which ones should I apply for? So far I have heard that the most of the schools in the west coast are much better than the east coast ones? are these rumors trure?

SCO is southeast and (in my opinion) it's a really good school. The application pool is pretty competitive...for the 2005 entering class the average grade point average right now is 3.44 with an average OAT of 324. Also, we tend to do well above average on the boards. For part III we just had 100% passage. Oh, and we also have won the "Optomery Super Bowl" the past two years at the annual AOA meeting (haha)!!!
You can find info on tuition at www.sco.edu but for the past 8 years students who have graduated have had 0% default on their loans...meaning, they are paying them back somehow 🙂

As jefguth said, you pretty much have the same chances of getting in as U.S. citizens have (except at Northeastern State, which doesn’t issue I-20s). The only thing that I can think of, is that UHCO will charge you an extra $75, on top of their $50 application fee, for being an international.
If I were a Canadian I would probably apply to one of the northern schools, just to be closer to home, or at least a place where you may be able to get cheap flights out of.
