I am running into a road block and I would love to hear from someone who had the similar experience so I can overcome this obstacle. I was a transfer student during my sophomore year. At that time, all the classes taken (were captured on a transcript) were evaluated and some credits were transferred and some were not. I completed my degree based on the result of this evaluation. So 10+ years later (i.e. right now when I am trying to put every to-do together 🙂), I reached out to this US college thinking they should probably still have the record somewhere, but just found out that their retention policy is only for 5 years, after that, everything's destroyed. I then reached out to the school back in my home country, and they have similar retention policy plus I have never graduated there so there was even less reason for them to keep the transcript.

What should I do from this point on?? 😕 I know my immediate next step probably is to call VMCAS. But I want to hear from people who have had similar experiences and what did you do (if anything at all can be done at this point).

Have you actually looked at the transcript from the school you graduated in the U.S. Every school I know of shows where your credits used to graduate come from, so there should be a "record" of those classes on their transcript. You wouldn't need to then duplicate the effort.

I also find it hard to believe your overseas school doesn't have a record of your work, they probably just don't want to bother. Try complaining louder. I have gotten transcripts from over 25 years ago from schools I took a single summer course in (of course that is the U.S, but I assume schools in other countries are the same).

Don't schools/VMCAS want transcripts though from where the coursework was originally taken, not just that it appears as transfer credit (especially since those don't always show grades)? Doesn't apply to me, but I thought that that was what I read somewhere last year. As always, I could be wrong though.

Startingover, I thought the same thing as you did initially but then learned that (as kakurubird said) VMCAS wants an evaluation done based on the original transcript. I read on VMCAS website that if nothing works, the applicant can request for waiver but require an official letter from the institution or the state dept of education (I gather it means the dept of education from that country). Anyway I hope I don't have to go that route. I will complaine a bit louder 🙂 the only thing is I cannot do this in person so cannot be very effective. Sigh....

🙂 I saw it while I was driving to work and I was like "wow this must be some medical term that I will have to do some research to know what it means". LOL I think my best option is to physically go back for holiday or something and sort it out myself. I don't have family member there anymore. Luckily I am just starting this journey so it's not like I need this information ASAP; though it's always better to sort out everything that I could earlier than later. 🙂 thanks again everyone!
