Hey Everyone,
Quick question, I am DO student planning on applying next year for path, I have seen many without a PGY-1 internship year. Do all programs have this setup? I have had docs tell me you have to do a rotating internship, then move into the residency program. Anyone know which way it is?
Thanks!

There have been previous post about this topic but I'll briefly fill you in. There are no pathology residencies that have a traditional internship year included. There are 5 states that require DOs to complete an AOA approved internship year in order to obtain a liscense. I believe they are MI, PA, OK, FL, and WV. I have also heard that it is possible to get that internship year waived if you jump thru some hoops and complete the necessary paperwork and applications.

That being said, I believe most DOs entering pathology do not complete an AOA approved internship. At least I haven't run into any yet nor am I myself doing one myself.

As far as I know the military residencies require a prelim med/surg year, but those are the only ones that I know of.

I went to DO school in Florida. I know that somebody in the year behind me was able to get into UM / Jackson Memorial w/o an internship. I'm not sure what kind of hoops she had to jump through. From what I've heard, the AOA is fairly lenient when it comes to pathology residents. They know that there are no AOA-approved residencies. At one time, I was considering getting my 1st year of residency approved, but I never went through w/ it.

Oddly enough, for those other DO's out there, there's an American College of Osteopathic Pathologists. I just recently received a membership application. The annual fee for a resident is $10.

Here's another tasty tidbit. I believe my alma mater, Nova Southeastern University, sponsors the only DO pathology fellowship.

Would that fellowship be the Forensics out of Miami-Dade. It always blows my mind why the backwards AOA has a fellowship but no residencies. Are they we will not ever have to use the "essential tool" of OMM ever again?

i doubt the forensic pathology fellowship in Dade county is AOA-associated. it's been around a really long time.

I think that most of the states only have rule regarding granting a full medical license and seeing as you don't need one of those (usually a training license only) is need for residency, getting into a training program isn't usually a concern.. it is getting a job there afterward.
